different

types of computer keyboards,

including wired, wireless, ergonomic, and multimedia. You can also use your
keyboard to perform many of the same tasks you can perform with a mouse.
Mouse - The mouse is a peripheral that is known as
a pointing device. It lets you point to objects on the
screen, click on them, and move them. There are two
main types: optical and mechanical. The difference
between the two is that the mechanical mouse uses a
rolling ball while optical mouse uses an electronic
eye to detect movements.

Trackball It is a mouse alternative in which it can do

the same things as a mouse. A trackball has a ball on
top that can rotate freely. Instead of moving the device
like a mouse, you can roll the ball with your fingers to
move the pointer.

Webcam Is a short term for web camera. Webcam is a

digital camera thats connected to a computer. It can send
live pictures from wherever it is sited to another location by
means of the internet.

Microphone - is a hardware peripheral that allows computer users

to input audio into their computers. It is commonly used to send
voice messages or to be able to talk in calls in the computer by
using the internet.

Scanner - is a device that captures images from

photographic

prints,

posters,

magazine

pages,

documents and similar sources for computer editing and

display. When a document is scanned, it is converted
into a digital format and can be edited in the computer
by using different editing tools and applications.

Graphics Tablet - enables a user to hand-draw

images, animations and graphics, similar to the
way a person draws images with a pencil and
paper. These tablets may also be used to capture
data or handwritten signatures.

OUTPUT DEVICES
Monitor - A monitor displays information in visual form,
using text and graphics. The portion of the monitor that

displays the information is called the screen. Like a television screen, a computer
screen can show still or moving pictures. Newer monitors usually have LCD (liquid
crystal display) or LED (light-emitting diode) displays.
Speakers - Speakers are used to play sound. They
can be built into the system unit or connected with
cables. Speakers allow you to listen to music and
hear sound effects from your computer.

Printer - A printer transfers data from a computer

onto paper. The two main types of printers are inkjet
printers and laser printers. Inkjet printers are the
most popular printers for the home. They can print in
black and white or in full color and can produce highquality photographs when used with special paper.

LCD Projector It is used for displaying video,

images or computer data on a screen or other flat
surface. It is a modern equivalent of the slide
projector or overhead projector.

Modem - A modem is a device that sends and
receives

computer

information

over

telephone line or high-speed cable. Modems

are sometimes built into the system unit, but
higher-speed modems are usually separate
components.

Headset Is a device in which it combines a headphone with a microphone.

Headsets provide the equivalent functionality of a telephone handset but with
hands-free operation
Fax Machine It is the telephonic transmission
of scanned printed material (both text and
images),

connected to a printer or other output device. It

can be connected to a computer.
SYSTEM UNIT

The system unit is the core of a computer system. Usually

it's a rectangular box placed on or underneath the desk.
Inside this box are many electronic components that
process information.

INSIDE THE SYSTEM UNIT

Motherboard - The motherboard is the

part of the computer

where such things as the processor,

memory

expansion cards and external devices

are

means that the motherboard controls

the

different components.
Processor It is considered as the engine of the
computer because it executes the lions share of the
information processing; the processor fetches commands
and necessary information from the RAM, carries out the
tasks specified by the commands, and returns the

modules,

processed information to the RAM. The speed of a computer depends largely on the
speed of the processor.
Random Access Memory (RAM) - is a memory storage that
functions during computer use and is especially utilized by
the processor. It makes it possible to access data very
quickly in random order.
Hard Drive - The hard drive is the permanent memory of
the computer where saved files remain even when the
computer is turned off.
DVD and Blu-ray Drives It

is

used to read and extract

the files saved inside a DVD/Blu-ray disc. Some
DVD/Blu-ray drives have writing capabilities in which
is allows the user to burn or save files in a disc for
backup purposes.
Computer Fan It is used for active cooling, and may
refer to fans that draw cooler air into the case from
the outside, expel warm air from inside, or move air
across a heat sink to cool a particular component.

Video Card It is used to process the graphics portion of the

processing load in order to help the CPU and make it run
more efficiently
Power Supply It is used to convert mains AC to lowvoltage regulated DC power in order for the internal
components of a computer to work.

Daughterboard - is a circuit board that plugs into

and extends the circuitry of another circuit board.

The other circuit board may be the computer's main board or it may be another
board or card that is already in the computer, often a sound card.
