Unit 1 : Conditionals
The conditionals are divided in 4 groups:
1. Zero conditional
Is use for common states or events
If / When + Present Simple + Present simple
If he's wearing a coat, Is cold outside(Si lleva un abrigo, es que
hace frio fuera)
We go to the park when the weather is sunny (Vamos al parque
cuando el tiempo es soleado)
2. First Conditional
Is use for future states or events
If / When + Present Simple / Continous + Will / Be going to
If you go through this way, you'll be late (Si vas por este camino,
llegars tarde)
I'm going to get angry if you shout me one more time (Me voy a
enfadar si me gritas una vez
mas)
3. Second Conditional
Is use in unlikely or imaginary states in present or future
If + Past simple / Continuous + Would / Could / Might /
Should + Present simple / Continuous
I he stopped losing time, he could study three careers (Si parara
de perder el tiempo, podra
estudiar tres carreras)
I would listen to the teacher if she were not so pretty (Escuchara
a la maestra si no fuera tan
guapa)
4. Third Conditional
Is use in imaginary or unlikely states or event in the past
If + Past Perfect + Would / Could / Might / Should + Have +
Past Participle
If we had been in england before, we might have known about the
rainy weather
(Si hubieramos estado en inglaterra anteriormente, quiz
sabriamos sobre este clima lluvioso)
Mixed Conditionals
*3 + 2; Imaginary present result of a past situation ; If I had
never take the bus, I would come late
*2 + 3 Ongoing situation with effects in past ; If I were a genius,
I would have invented a flying car
Other conditionals
* Imperative, sugestions and instructions : If you want this job, get
a car (If+Pres. Simple+Imp.)
* Suggestions : If you have learned music, you should try other kind of
art to inspirate yourself
(If+Present/Past Simple + can/could/would/should/might)
* We can use Will after If, as replace If with Should in
polite request.
* To say that one situation depends to another situation or
person we can use
was/were not for//had not been for
I'd go out if it wasn't for this rain
*To imagine a future Situation : If the technology were to become avaiable, we
would do
anything we want (if+Was/were+to+Inf.)
*We can use If so, given, otherwise and provided instead of If
and Unless intead if not.
