Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational School

787 King Street West

Kitchener, ON
N2G 1E3
March 6, 2010

Dear Mr. Bulmer,

I have been referred to you by Matthew Fox, who is currently in Teacher’s College at Queen’s University and will
be teaching at the Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational School from March 22 – April 9. Through Matt, I
have learned about your Geography class and the group of students that will be going to Ecuador for one week
over March Break. Having been in a service-learning program myself, I realized the importance of being a global
citizen and see tremendous value in your program. I am writing to you today as I would love to discuss further with
you the possibility of collaboration.

A group of friends and I have started an initiative on using various forms of media to tell stories of social change.
We want to leverage the power of storytelling to highlight the important work being done in the community, as
well as to inspire others the reason why it is important for us to commit to something greater than ourselves.

We would like to do the following with your students.

Before the trip:

• Be invited to your class the week before the trip to capture pre-departure discussions. We would like to
capture their excitement and worries on camera

During the trip:

• Provide the group of students with a Flip camcorder and ask them to document their week-long journey.
We will provide a toolkit to serve as guideline and are happy to work with you so that it is consistent with
your plans and approach

After the trip:

• Be invited to your class again to participate in post-journey discussions on camera
• My team will edit the footages and produce DVDs that students and parents can buy at cost by the end of
the year to serve as a travel memoir to this eye-opening journey
• Help with fundraising ideas where appropriate
• Help with spreading the word about the program to the community where appropriate

No clips will be shared with any other individual without the parents’ and/or your permission. The goal of this
exercise is to empower the students to become proactive in finding their own voice and advocating for issues they
are passionate about. Through the process, we also hope they have the chance to understand themselves better
both as an individual and as a team member.

I am very excited about this initiative and would love to hear back from you soon. You could share your thoughts
through Matt at [email protected] or contact us directly at [email protected] or
[email protected]. Please also find attached a presentation on our initiative, We Move Media.

Warm Regards,

Nick Petten and Ruby Ku

Cuba Trip: April 2-10

Suggested Scenarios to film:

1) 1-3 min video-journal every night to recap the day. Each student should take turn
throughout the trip.
2) When come across the following scenarios:
a. I felt frustrated when…
b. I was really touched when…
c. I used to think that……, but now….

Camcorder Specifications:

Battery: The Flip Camcorder runs on regular AA batteries. Mr. Bulmer will have extra batteries
with him on the trip.

Memory: The Flip Camcorder has an 8GB built-in memory and will record 120 minutes of
footages.

Tripod: The tripod could be used to attach to the Flip Camcorder when recording the video-
journal.

Uploading: Plug the built-in USB into a laptop and it will open similar to a memory
stick/external drive.

Other suggestions from the We Move Media team:

1) Practice shooting on Thursday April 1st around the school to get familiar with the Flip
Camcorder, and ask Mr. Bulmer to clear out all footages before the trip.
2) Record scenes of the trip on your own cameras, and only use the Flip Camcorder for
above suggested scenarios. It only holds 120 minutes of footages – so you might want to
come up with a plan as a group of what to shoot. It’s your story so you decide the story
you want to tell.
3) Observe, listen, learn, support each other, and have fun.
