Action of Heat: A small amount of
the salt is taken in a dry test tube
and gently heated at first and then
strongly.
Reddish Brown Gas evolves.
Flame Test: A small amount of the
salt is made into paste with conc HCl
in a watch glass and introduced into No characteristic colored flame
the non luminous part of the bunsen
flame.
Ash Test: To the little of salt taken in
a test tube mixed with cobalt nitrate
and conc. HNO3,soak a filter paper
and brn it in non-luminous part of the
bunsen flame.
No characteristic colored ash
Identification Tests

Action of dil.HCl: A small amount
of salt is treated with dil HCl
No characteristic natural gas
evolved
Action of Dil.H2SO4: A small
amount of salt is rubbed with dil
H2SO4 in a watch glass
No characteristic observation
Concentrated H2SO4 Test: A small
Reddish Brown Vapour evolved
amount of slat is treated with conc
and solution turns brown.
H2SO4 in watch glass
Copper Turning Test: A small
amount of the salt is heted with
copper turnings and conc H2SO4
Reddish Brown Gas evolves.
Action of BaCl2: Some amount of
BaCl2 is added to the salt solution.
No characteristic observation
Confirmatory Tests
Carbonate: A small amout of the
salt is treated with dil HCl and the
colorless, odourless gas evolved is
passed through lime water taken in
another test tube.
No characteristic change
2(A)
Sulphide: To a few drops of salt
solution, a few drops of silver nitrate
solution is added.
No black precipitate is formed

Sulphide: To a few drops of salt
solution, 2mL of Lead acetate
solution is added.
No black precipitate is formed
3(A)
Chloride: To a few drops of salt
solution, a few drops of dilute HNO3
and silver nitrate solution are added.
No curdy white precipitate is
formed.
3(B)
Chloride:- Chromyl Chloride Test:
To a small amount of salt, a pinch of
Potassium dichromate is added and
heated with a few drops of
conc.H2SO4.
No charcteristic observation
4(A)
Acetate: To a salt solution 1 or 2
drops of neutral ferric chloride
solution id added.
No characteristic observation
4(B)
Acetate: A mixture of salt and
ethanol is heated with conc. H2SO4 in
a test tube.it is then cooled and then
poured into excess of water.
No charateristic observation
5(A)
Nitrate:-Brown Ring Test: A few
drops of the salt solution is mixed
with an equal volume of freshly
prepared ferrous sulphate solution
and shaken well. To this conc.H2SO4
is added in drops along the walls of
the test tube.
A brown ring is formed at the
junction of the two layers .
5(B)
Nitrate: To the salt solution few
drops of diphenyl amine is added.
A deep blue colorisation is
obtained
5( C )
Nitrate: To the salt solution , NaOH
solution and aluminium powder or
zinc dust is addded and heated.
Evolution of colourless gas with
the smell of ammonia. Dense
white fumes are produced with
conc HCl
6(A)
Sulphate: To salt solution a little
lead acetate solution is added.
No charateristic change
6(B)
Sulphate: The above precipitate is
separated and heated with
ammonium acetate solution.
No charateristic change
