SURVEY ON STUDENTS IN SMK TAMAN MELATI FOR THE DECLINE IN THE ENGLISH

LANGUAGE
The members of English Language Society recently conducted a survey to
determine students declination in the English Language which they were
interviewed by means of a questionnaire. Approximately 100 students were asked
on the possible reasons of students deterioration in the English Language. Students
were required to tick items on given list.
It was found that on average, most students of total 42% assumed that the
English Language is not compulsory to pass accordance to the grading system for
Malaysia Schools which acquire students in still receiving the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia
certificate as long as they pass in History and Malay Language subjects. That sums
up on why students considered that the English Language is optional. Less
important was selected by 25% respectively. Students nowadays, even in our
country, seem hard in mastering the English Language especially in their speech
since the language itself is not widely used in Malaysia. Given the fact that the main
language in Malaysia named the Malay Language is extensively spoken in order to
blend in the community even though Malaysia has a multilingual society.
On the other hand, 20% out of 100% felt that there was a lack of emphasis to
encourage effective usage of English. Wholly, parents play an important role on
reminding their children on the usefulness and the advantages of being proficient in
English, in terms of writing and communicating. 20% of the students selected that
there were not much being done to love English. For instance, in terms of
communication, parents are indifferent when it comes in making sure their kids are
able to speak in English. Parents are not quite concerned in the proficiency of their
children in the English Language as perspectively they think that students in
Malaysia are exam-oriented. Only 6% stated the lack of exposure in English. This
might be because they are not prone to English materials mainly at home such as
English books, movies, and music. Nevertheless, unqualified teachers were voted
by 2% of the students. The Malaysia Education system is actually in a shortage of
English teachers. Therefore, teachers who are majoring in another subject were
asked to teach English.
Based on the observation, it is recommended that students themselves
should change their mindset on English. But still, there are several initiatives which
can be implemented by parents and teachers. First of all, parents should use English
whenever they interact with their kids. This method is usually being cultivate to
them from a young age. Besides that, in order to progress a better command of
English Language among students are by educating them about the importance of
English and encourage them to love English.
