Golden Hills School Division, met before
a packed house at the Standard School on
Aug. 29 to inform parents of details concerning the delayed opening of the new
Wheatland Crossing School, timelines
going forward, bus routes and possible
options to move the students to the new
school.
The superintendent said that all students from Gleichen, Hussar, Rockyford
and Standard who were originally slated to go to the new Wheatland Crossing School will be going to the Standard
School until the new school construction
is complete.
Daverne offered two options for eventually moving the students to the new
school. First, he said that students in
Grades 3 through 6 who were originally
slated to go to the new school on Sept. 1,
could move into the new school around
the beginning of October as long as no
weather problems occur.
Alternatively, Daverne said all students
Kindergarten through Grade 12 could
move at the same time, after Oct. 1.
Conversation at the meeting was tense
and the discussion heated as Daverne answered to the large crowd of parents.
Daverne said the contractors are working hard.
Their focus right now is getting the roof
done, getting everything ready in Grades
3 to 6, and getting the site manageable for
all of us moving forward, he said.
By the end of September, without any
more weather issues, that whole parking
area and site area should be complete.
Other areas of the school will need to
be completed as well. The superintendent
said the junior/senior high wing, the common area and the administration section
are expected to be done by the end of
October.

There are many health diets around. Two include

the Mediterranean and DASH diets. Both have
been linked to lowering the risk of dementias
including Alzheimers. But now researchers are
combining the two of them into the MIND diet.
What does it recommend? Avoid the 5 unhealthy
food groups: sweets, fried food, red meat, butter

The MIND diet recommends eating lots of the
brain-healthy food groups. In this group are
green leafy vegetables, nuts, vegetables, beans,

abstain from marijuana during preconception,
pregnancy and lactation.
Also, women appear to experience more dizziness
after smoking marijuana than men. This may have
something to do with body mass differences.

usage of counterfeit currency in and around
the Town of Strathmore. Specifically 50 dollar
American bills have been used,
often targeting small businesses.
The RCMP ask that business owners take the
steps to check currency and call the RCMP if
they suspect counterfeits. Business owners
have a right to refuse any currency they
suspect to be counterfeit.
Strathmore RCMP is encouraging businesses to
take the time to educate their staff about what to
look for and to take an extra moment to
examine all bills that theyre given.

Plans for Rosebud designed and delivered

Growth in Rosebud received a boost
with Wheatland County councils approval of the Rosebud Area Structure
Plan (ASP), hamlet boundaries and the
Rosebud River Ridge development.
Public hearings were held on Aug.
16 and subsequent approved votes for
second, third and final readings were
given.
Council reviewed and corrected portions of the final ASP document, and
planner Gerry Melenka reviewed some
of the new additions such as the proposal for an open space master plan for
recreation and tourism in the area.
The open space master plan will
hopefully make Rosebud a recreation
destination, while protecting the small
artistic flavour of the hamlet, said Melenka. One thing is clear that in Rosebud, compared to anywhere else in
the County, there are a fair amount of
mixed-use options. We tried to stay on
top of changes and expansion to allow
future growth.
There was consideration of existing
properties and utilizing areas like the
old railway line for possible future development of a walking trail. The hamlet and expansion areas fall under environmentally-sensitive guidelines and
those are clarified in the plan.

This plan sets the stage, said Melenka. Considerable cooperation between
landowners and the County will make
future development happen.
There were some areas that required
clarification for people attending the
public hearings. One was waste water
and storm water management.
We still dont have clear answers, but
we havent restricted where it can go.
There are a lot of options on the table,
said Melenka.
One landowner wanted clarification
on the hamlet boundary changes that
affected her property. It was stated that
in her case, the land would be reclassified to country residential, but she
could continue with current agricultural uses.
The 17 residential lots and one commercial lot for the Rosebud River Ridge
development was approved, and a
spokesman for the
Rosebud School
of the Arts present at the meeting said the project would provide

much needed accommodation for staff

and students.
We are glad to hear it is an open
and fluid document and available to
change, said planner Patricia Maloney
about the ASP. Maloney presented plans
for Rosebud River Ridge development.

According to the Alberta Association of Optometrists, parents should take their children for eye
exams at six months of age, once between ages
two and five, and every year thereafter.
Children are covered for the financial cost of
full eye exams by the government up to their 19th
birthday. However, according to Strathmore optometrist Michelle Duke at FYI Doctors, a lot of
children still arent getting their eyes checked.
Its a little better, but still not great, she said.
It kind of baffles me why people dont take it
more seriously. I really think its important they
do.
Duke is trying to help get the word out to
parents to come in and get their childrens eyes
checked. She said the association has a really
great program called I See I Learn, designed to
give handouts to kindergarten students as reminders for getting eyes checked. If the children
end up needing glasses, they can get their first
pair for free.
So theres absolutely no excuse whatsoever to
not get their kids eyes checked, said Duke.
The association states that one in four schoolage children have a vision problem and 80 per
cent of a childs learning is obtained through vision.
We want to make sure, especially going into
school, that they can see, that they are able to
read and learn to the best of their ability and, on
the flip side, make sure their eyes are healthy,

Duke said even though eye exam numbers are
not as high as she would like to see them, this is
a busy time of year for checkups.
I think it is becoming more well-known that
iys something you should do as part of your regular routine, she said. Go back to school, go get
those eyes checked.
Duke said she loves working with children and
finds her job fun and rewarding. She noted that
a lot of times, especially for first eye exams, children are initially apprehensive and scared, and
then are having a blast by the end.
A lot become excited for their next eye exam.
Optometrists check everything at a comprehensive eye exam, including vision, prescription,
binocular vision and a host of other things. Duke
said screening tests arent very good and do not
offer the same type of thorough services. And
sometimes a visual issue may go undiagnosed
and reported instead as ADD, ADHD, dyslexia or
a learning disability.
The two big eye issues that can occur in young
children are retinal blastoma and diabetes. Retinal blastoma is a type of eye cancer which most
of the time is caught before children turn three
years of age.
Eye disease and blindness can be avoided with
regular eye checkups because the sooner these
illnesses are caught, the better. Duke said every
childs eye exam is a little bit different, and that
she changes it to their abilities and to how its going. She can direct the exams to still figure out the
same things but just in different ways.

I recently asked the kids at church

one Sunday, if they were excited to
get back to school.
Some nodded a bit slowly, two of the
older ones gestured, not really, but
one little girl excitedly said YES,
and then went on to tell me all the
things she was looking forward to,
when it came to starting preschool.
Her excitement clearly indicated she
saw the beginning of preschool as a
grand new adventure, a time of doing
new things, of going somewhere
special, with a special person she
had already met, who would be
her new teacher, and would, in
many ways, open new doors, new
opportunities for her.
Starting school for her was a delight,
because she would make big
steps, meet new people, and it was
grand!
I found myself wondering, how can
we make the start of a new season
equally exciting in our own lives?
How can we enter into this season of
fall, and harvest, with a sense of joy
at what we might learn, accomplish,
who we might meet?
How can we see each new season
as an opening of another door, a new
opportunity to make something more
of ourselves and our lives?
How can the coming season of fall,
and then winter, be filled with eager
anticipation and joy?
Because after all, that is a reflection
of how God made us to be, and how

A fathers worst nightmare is getting a call that their child
has been injured in an accident.
On July 29, Don Derraugh received such a call from his
daughter Rochelle, that she and his other daughter Tarynn

and two of their friends were in a car crash.

The group was travelling to Calaway Park for a
fun day to cap off the summer, before returning
to school in the fall.
Rochelle had the presence of mind to call her
father and 911.
Rochelle was the one who called me; she had
the strength to call me, said Derraugh. I had
been talking to Rochelle for about two minutes
and an off-duty paramedic showed up and he was
able to describe everything how Rochelle was
doing, how Tarynn was doing. Rochelle didnt
know where they were, so he told me where they
were and the best way to get there.
The car was hit broadside and Tarynn was in
critical condition. Derraugh was thankful for his
daughter Rochelles strength under pressure and
the intervention of the off duty medic.
The injured were transported to the Foothills
hospital, where the girls minor injuries were
treated and Tarynn was admitted to ICU. The accident is still under police investigation.
There were several small miracles surrounding Tarynns accident. Derraugh said the first was
that a higher power must have known what was
coming. He was supposed to be at work that day,
where phones are required to be kept off. For
some reason, he was given the day off, which allowed him to be there when Rochelle called.
Tarynns injuries included brain trauma, five
skull fractures, burst eardrums, and eye and jaw
injuries. She was in ICU stabilized and transferred
to the neurology ward. She lapsed in and out of
coma during the following weeks and the family
was unsure what the outcome would be.
The Derraugh family attends Hope Community
Covenant church in Strathmore. When Robyn Shipley, who attended school with Tarynn, heard of
her accident, she felt a calling to go and be a
support to her, even though she did not know
Tarynn well.
Several ministers had been to Tarynns room to
offer the family support and prayer; and a second
miracle came when Shipley and her mother Tracie Anhorn came to the room and another healing
prayer and an anointment of oil was done.
Anhorn indicated the group felt a presence in
the room and medical monitors responded in a
positive way. The brain pressure monitors normal

readings are about 10 and under, but there was

concern for Tarynns as her readings were consistently double that reading.
At one point it was at 21. The day we were
praying it was 11, and as we were praying, we all
looked up at the same time and the monitor had
dropped three points, said Anhorn.
My daughter told me later that she was praying
too. She said to me while we were praying something happened to my body and I cant explain
it. But I knew what it was.
Rochelle believes the third small miracle happened when Tarynn woke up from her coma. It
was on Rochelles birthday.
Derraugh, a single dad, along with Rochelle
and another daughter, Kaila, were so thankful
when Tarynn came out of her coma and started
making headway on the road to healing. She now
gets the occasional day pass.
She is progressing a lot, even with what her
primary issues are. It is baby steps, said Derraugh.
The doctors said Tarynn would need 24/7 care
to gain the best recovery. It was a tough decision
for Derraugh, but he decided he would quit his
job and provide that care. He is currently living
in a bed and breakfast in Calgary, which is close
to the hospital. Anhorn is sheltering Rochelle in
her home until the family can get back together,
so Rochelle can resume school in Strathmore this
fall.
Derraugh said the experience is a journey of
love and he is overwhelmed by the support the
community has shown his family. He said he believes in the power of prayer and he couldnt have
gone through this without his faith.
Without this financial support I wouldnt be
able to stay in Calgary, said Derraugh. There are
people we dont even know offering support. I
have been accepting of it in a positive way because it is a sharing of love. We wont ever be
able to express our thanks to everyone, but it is
fantastic. We are entirely thankful and grateful.
He wanted a special acknowledgment for the
initiatives Tracie Anhorn has taken on his behalf.
She set up a GoFundMe page, gofundme.com to
raise money for the family, organized a fundraiser
and people contact Tracie at 403-630-1510 if they
wish to donate in the future.

Strathmores character shines again, as the community stepped up for a family facing a traumatic
event in their life.
Don Derraugh was facing a financial burden
when his daughter Tarynn was critically injured
in a car accident. In order for Tarynn to recover,
doctors said she would need 24/7 care during her
rehabilitation.
As a single father, Derraugh had to make the
important and caring decision to quit work and
tend to his daughters needs.
I would hate that to happen to my daughter
and I would not want to be in his position, said
Tracie Anhorn, one of the organizers for the event.

Derraugh family with their financial needs.
Four musical acts donated their time and talent
on Aug. 28 for the fundraiser held at Hope Community Covenant church. The musicians included
Charlie Bailey, Lana and Keith Floen (Sidekicks),
Bekah and the Boys, and Travis Friesen from
Rosebud.
There were many people in attendance to enjoy
the music and share their faith and support with
the family.
Those who were not able to attend can still
donate by accessing the GoFundMe page, and

who attended our recent Western CHAMP Seminar.
Through CHAMP, young amputees are encouraged to develop a positive attitude towards their amputation, and live to their full potential. This year
marks the 70th anniversary of The War Amps Key
Tag Service, and donations to the service have provided generations of child amputees, with financial
assistance for artificial limbs, regional seminars and

peer support.
Articles like yours certainly help to inform the
public of the resources and programs available to
child amputees. The War Amps receives no government grants and its programs are possible through
public support of our Key Tag and Address Label
Service. Your coverage will go a long way in helping
to spread the word.

Busy summer across the riding

This summer, I have been busy visiting communities right across the vast Bow River riding. I have
had the opportunity to interact with many constituents, attend many summer events and continue to
do so. A number of common themes have come up
across the riding, and I would like to share some
of them with you.
One of the big issues that many municipal officials in Bow River raised with me was the evergrowing need for infrastructure money. With that in
mind, the Alberta government will, within the next
few weeks, be releasing the list of projects which
will be receiving federal infrastructure dollars, and
we will be monitoring carefully to see what kind of
money comes to Bow River communities.
With respect to our very important agricultural
sector, I have heard concerns about trade issues
as well as labour issues, such as shortages. I know
that this is an ongoing problem and urge the federal government to act on it.
Pipelines continued to be an issue, and I have
heard concerns that neither government, federal or
provincial, was doing enough to ensure safe new
pipelines are approved for construction, which
would result in a much needed boost to our economy.
I heard concerns from many law-abiding hunters, ranchers, farmers and sports shooters about

recent gun law and regulatory changes. There is

Bill S-223, which I hope will die in the Senate and
am continuing to monitor. There are also changes to the Ruger 10/22 rifles that are quite frankly
unacceptable. I wrote a letter to the Public Safety
Minister recently to ask that an amnesty be granted
so that those who are law-abiding citizens are not
made into criminals overnight. I often write letters
to Ministers on issues pressing to my constituents,
and when the House of Commons is in session, I
typically hand deliver them directly to the Minister
in the House Chamber.
I have also heard concerns about the provincial
and potential federal carbon tax, which most said
was inappropriate at this time, in this economy.
I heard many concerns about the government
wanting to change the way you elect MPs, and I
urge you to watch for my householder which contains a survey on this issue. It should be hitting
your door any day now, so please fill in and mail
the reply card, postage free, back to make sure
your voice is heard.
I also heard about ongoing immigration issues
of various kinds, which affect Albertas economic
situation.

New lifesaving tool for fire department

The Wheatland West Fire Station will soon have new lifesaving equipment. The purchase of
an eDRAULIC Combi Tool was approved by Wheatland County at their last council meeting.
Wheatland West currently responds to 29 per cent of the calls in Wheatland County and
41 per cent of motor vehicle collisions, often involving extractions of people in the vehicles,
said Judy Unsworth, fire and emergency management coordinator.
Fire crews are currently supplied with AMKUS spreaders and cutters, but new car technology includes a blended boron steel those cutters cannot get through. The new rescue tool
will improve speed and efficiency of the crews in their work and gain valuable time in getting people to medical care.
Wheatland West volunteer firefighters donated $9,867 towards the purchase of the tool and
the County will provide the remaining $6,578 required.

An upcoming agritourism and farm
direct marketing bus tour for producers and processors will offer farmers
and processors the opportunity to
learn, network and share ideas.
The tour, scheduled for Sept. 14,
will feature three different farm stops
Seeds to Greens, Rocking R Guest
Ranch and Country Lane Farms
where the operators will share their
experiences with agritourism and farm
direct marketing.
Seeds to Greens is a vegetable community-supported agriculture program
and Country Lane Farms offers directto-consumer sales of naturally raised
chicken. Rocking R Guest Ranch runs
a bed and breakfast, and provides
other events such as farm-to-table dinners.
According to Wendy Gerbrandt,
community economic development
co-ordinator with Community Futures
Wildrose, the goal of the tour is to encourage producers and processors to
learn more about agritourism.
[Also] how they can develop this
into their business and consider it as a
viable revenue stream, and to educate
the public about food, she said.
The tour will end at the Rocking R
Guest Ranch where participants will
learn how to host a culinary event,
with local farms showcasing and providing food. Chef Judy Wood from
Meez Cuisine and Catering in Calgary
will demonstrate how to provide a
farm-to-table dinner.
Colin Gosselin, senior project coordinator with Alberta Agriculture and
Forestry, said Seeds to Greens, Country Lane Farms and Rocking R Guest
Ranch all participated in Alberta Open

Farm Days this year and will share

their experiences with the program.
They are going to be sharing their
experience with hosting the public on
their farms, and one of the coaches
from the coaching program whos an
experienced agritourism coach will be
coming along for the day, sharing insights as well, said Gosselin.
The tour is also open to economic
development organizations and tourism operators, or anyone who has
direct contact in working with agritourism and helping producers and
processors expand.
The tour is designed to be an extension to the recent Alberta Open Farm
Days and will be put on through a joint
effort between Alberta Agriculture and
Forestry, Alberta Culture and Tourism
and Community Futures Wildrose.
This ends Alberta Open Farm Days
really nicely. Its that next extension to
make sure weve networked, connected, educated and shared, and passed
on the information we all learned at
Open Farm Days to others, said Gerbrandt.
She added that agritourism is a concept in which farms open their gates
for visitors to have an educational experience surrounding food. Visitors
can learn the sciences behind farming,
how to protect and harvest crops, how
to create a culinary event and a wide
range of other information.
Agritourism explains how food gets
from the field to your fork, said Gerbrandt.
Space is limited on the tour, which
costs $30 (prepaid) for each participant. Registration will be accepted up
to Sept. 7.

The first Canada 150th
planning committee meeting
was held Aug. 25 at the FCSS
office in Strathmore, hosted
by the Town of Strathmores
community services coordinator Tracy Simpson.
The goal of the meeting
was to describe the meaning
of Canadas 150th Anniversary and how that pertains to
the Strathmore area in terms
of planning events to commemorate this important anniversary.
Simpson led discussions to
also provide an overview of
a possible committee structure and funding opportunities to help commemorate
this important event. This
was followed by a lengthy
brainstorming session and
then a look forward at the
next steps that will be taken.
Simpson said that in the
Canada 150 community program, there is up to $75,000
per community in soft funding that can be used towards
program development, initiatives and celebrations.
Thats a huge piece that
were going to be looking
for this committee to apply
for, and well even come up
with what were going to do
with that money if we get it,
she said.
Simpson said they will be
looking at options in celebrating Canadas history, culture and people, and how to
create a legacy in area communities with this funding.
Heritage Canada is looking to make this a year-long
celebration and will set forth
rules and regulations. There
has already been a Canada
150th logo created by an Ottawa artist.
Simpson said she would
be happy with a committee of six to seven people;
however, a bigger committee
would also be fine.
One of the big pieces next
year will be Canada Day. The
town already plans Canada
Day, but theres potential to
take that day and grow it

into maybe a weekend, said

Simpson. The other piece is
if we want to host other festivals or celebrations throughout the year.
Simpson said in terms of
fund development, they are
looking for some people
who are really keen to apply
for some grants and to solicit
corporate sponsorships and
build funds.
The more money we have,
the more we can do and the
more legacy projects we can
do, she said.
The legacy project will be
an important component of
planning and the committee
will look to see what they
want to stay in the town for
the next 100 years. A clock
was placed downtown in the
park for the Strathmore centennial.
The committee will be
looking for some really creative people to help promote
Canada 150 and Strathmore.
Town of Strathmore funding will be provided, and
the town typically spends
$20,000 on Canada Day.
I would be optimistic that
we could get more funds for
next year if we had plans
for it and any other initiatives we can put forth for
additional funding. I think
the town is really keen, especially around those legacy
projects, said Simpson.
At the brainstorming session, attendees came up with
many great ideas, including
a country market fair and
a battle of the local bands.
However, it was emphasized
that the Canada 150 committee will need to consider
both local and national ideas
within Canada.
Going forward, formation
of a committee and delegating committee positions will
be a first priority. Volunteers
will have the option of joining the committee or a project, and a leadership body
will help direct and organize
everything into one big vision.
Ideas will be discussed at
the next meeting, which will
be set in September.

We need to change downtown

To the Editor
I am writing in response to the recent
article concerning the Downtown Design
Review Committee submissions.
The committee provided downtown
concept schematics with different ideas,
including views of Second and Third Avenues, widened sidewalks, one-way streets,
street trees, urban designs, bump-outs and
pedestrian crossings.
I have lived in Strathmore for 40 years
and some of these ideas have been tried,
paid for and failed miserably.
In the early 80s the traffic flow was altered into one-way and then altered into
a one-way flow in the opposite direction.
Sidewalks were colored red and trees
came and went.
Flower pots and planters also came
and went resulting in some planters being abandoned for decades and still not
in use.
We all need to reflect on the mistakes of
the past and to not repeat them.
As for widening the sidewalks what
does this accomplish?
It means more snow to shovel out onto
the street in front of each business.
The downtown core should be established as a heritage site.
Cattle once were directed down second
avenue to the loading dock at the CPR Station and the proud King Edward Hotel sat
majestically on the corner.
There are several creative suggestions
available to create a better atmosphere
downtown but it seems that no one is listening. Greedy land owners only want it
their way.
It is inevitable that the push continues
and the downtown core will be torn down
and re-established as C1/R2 which is commercial main floor and two storey residential above.
None of the current buildings can stand
as they currently are and renovate and
build up to accommodate two story residential except for possibly the Bank Fitness.

R2 where will they all park?
Directly in front of the business that
they live above strangling the parking for
customers.
Parking at Kinsmen Lake was constructed to alleviate the density of parking in
the downtown core.
Will these new residents park there?
Campers, boats, utility trailers, motor
homes and recreational vehicles etc will
alter the landscape in a negative way.
Let us get the recent installments in order before we move forward.
When does the clock ever display the
correct time at Time Square Park?
In the winter no one shovels the park
making it impossible to use and dangerous slip and falls if you do venture in.
There are establishments in the downtown core that serve alcohol so you cant
implement the two-hour parking that was
recently discussed due to the fact that
anyone drinking should leave their vehicle and seek an alternate way home.
With a two-hour parking in place those
that drink at these establishments would
be more likely to drive rather than pay the
fine or towing fee risking far more than
parking congestion.
We need to refocus on the true jewel of
downtown and that is Kinsmen Lake.
It will only cost approximately $200,000
to clean out the lake and make it a centre
piece once again.

Rosebud Theatres An Inspector Calls: a triple-wrapped mystery

An Inspector Calls, a murder mystery set in England in 1912, will open
in Rosebud Theatres Opera House on
Sept. 9.
The cast and crew gathered Aug. 15
for their first read the first time the
entire cast reads the script aloud together.
The story of An Inspector Calls opens
on the wealthy Birling family, congratulating themselves on the engagement
of their daughter to the son of a busi-

ness rival, setting up a nice little business merger at the same time. Father
Arthur Birling declares his conviction
that human beings are responsible only
to look after themselves, and not each
other. Then a police inspector arrives,
asking questions about a mysterious
death in their small town.
The inspectors persistent questions
lead to the unraveling of a fascinating mystery, but then, just when we
think were getting to the heart of it,
we discover theres another mystery we
havent even begun to explore.

Since this story is set in a time and
place thats far from my home and society, I thought this play would be simply a fun, intriguing escape. An Inspector Calls does give us that but it also
gives us more.
Despite their British accents and
formal vocabulary and stiff costumes,
these characters could have this conversation in 2016, in any Canadian
workplace, in an Albertan neighbourhood, and perhaps around my own
dinner table.
It leaves us with a lingering challenge as to whether well truly accept
responsibility for other human beings
or, as daughter Sheila Birling says,
whether well go on in the same old
way as before.
Social media gives us the idea that
were all involved in caring for each
other, director Karl H. Sine said, but

were not. Social justice is a central

component of most religions, he reminded us, and were here to take care
of each other. When people see An Inspector Calls, he said, he hopes people
will have their own responsibility reflected back to them.
Though An Inspector Calls was set
over 100 years ago, we still struggle
with who our brother is, and who matters, said artistic director Morris Ertman. Thats why Karl Sine is directing
this show, Ertman noted, because Sine
has a heart for this play and for its important question.
Im eager to see An Inspector Calls in
its fully-developed form, with set and
costumes, lights and sound, because
its a great story but also because I
wish I could get closer to the bottom
of its unsolvable mystery. Yet perhaps
its most important impact on me will
be the question I ask myself, and my
answer: I believe I am my brothers
keeper, but do my actions reflect that?

Me and the Mrs., the Rosebud-based
duo Paul and Heather Zacharias who
perform honest and melodic folk and
roots music, are touring the western
provinces this summer. Now theyre
bringing their talents home to southern
Alberta.
Weve been playing a bunch of new
tunes and getting many requests to record these songs, Paul Zacharias said.
People have been incredibly receptive.
The shows have been so much fun.
The couple have also enjoyed time
with friends and family, and a visit to
the tiny church in historic Barkerville,
B.C., where Zachariass great-greatgrandparents were married. And it was
memorable to have a goat eat a hole in
Heather Zachariass skirt at the Beacon
Hill Park petting zoo in Victoria.
In Rosebud in early September, Me
and the Mrs. will give two performances with two other Rosebud-rooted
bands: The Fig and the Flame, and The
Dearhearts.
Our friends in these two bands are
so talented and write amazing songs.
This is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime
thing, Zacharias said. The fact that we
have these three bands all playing on
the same night is a dream come true
for us.
The three groups will give a concert
Sept. 3 in Rosebuds Akokiniskway Gallery. Michael Janke of Six Two Six Productions will film the event. The next
day, at the all-day 15 Minutes of Fame
festival, the three bands will collabo-

Musical Arts Society at Kims
Cafe in Strathmore.

probably half the songs will
be brand new material,
Zacharias said. A new duet
called Rubies, Pearls and
Jewels is a new favourite
for us. Its about two lovers
at odds in an old fashioned
western shootout.

On Oct. 20 at 7 p.m.,
theyll be at Hope Community Covenant Church for
the 11th annual Hope Bridges Gala Artists Among Us, a
celebration of the communitys diverse artistic talents.

looks to increase
registration

The Blackfoot Cultural Show and Rodeo was held at the Strathmore Ag
Grounds on Aug. 27-28 and participants came in from all over North
America. The event honours Clifford Manyguns, who passed away in
2007. This year a special tribute was made to Tommy Dixon, who was a
former president of the Indian Cowboys Rodeo Association (IRCA) and
he passed away in 2015. Exceptional rodeo and horsemanship skills were
on display in events such as bull riding, steer riding, bareback and saddle
bronc riding, breakaway and steer wrestling, barrels and team roping.

The Strathmore Minor Ringette Association is busy

getting organized as it enters its regular season with
evaluations starting on Sept. 7 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
This year, the association will have teams comprised
of U10 to U19 players and will also offer a Can Skate
program for seven to 10-year-olds. Can Skate will be
run as a fun program offering basic skills and games.
Association vice president Derek Innes said they
have a fairly good idea what numbers they have, and
the association would really like to see the number of
registrants increase this year.
For this season wed just like to see our numbers
grow, he said. We really want to see kids come out
and give it a try - were sure if they come out and give
it a try, theyre going to enjoy it.
Non-registered youth are also able to come to the
rink on Sept. 7 to register, and all players will be
placed into age categories. Then, tryouts will start to
assess the skills and see where players belong.
Cory Moore will be in charge of evaluations, and
there will be many coach and parent volunteers on
hand to help out.
There are a whole handful of coaches and parents,
theres a load of volunteers that help with evaluations, said Innes.
He said it will take about a week to get all the tryouts done and by the end of September they will
know where everyone belongs.
Typically the real star athletes stand out; and then
we place the middle groups and see what kind of
numbers we have for teams, he said.
Innes said there will be changes this year.
The evaluations are going to be a little bit different this year, said Innes. Were not exactly sure how
Ringette Alberta is going to set it up. Therell be some
new faces on the board and some new coaches in the
benches.
There will be a lot of U10s and U12s this year; however, Innes would like to see as many Can Skaters as
possible.
Last year, there were 26 Can Skaters and some of
those kids will be moving up to U10, while others
remain in Can Skate.
The association is looking for volunteers and is also
looking to fill the associations president position.
Ringette survives strictly on volunteers. We cant
have enough volunteers, said Innes.
The association will also be offering a chance to
come try ringette on Sept. 8 at 6 p.m.

The Strathmore Minor Hockey Association will soon be starting its season,
with evaluations starting the second
week of September and running to the
first week in October.
Association president Kevin Brelis
said the association expected registrant
numbers to go down this year due to
the flailing Alberta economy; however,
numbers have stayed about the same.
Normally we have about 400 players every season, and it looks like with
our final registration deadline coming
Sept. 2, theres a good chance that were
probably going to hit that 400 again,
said Brelis. It was kind of a surprise.

have their child sitting on a computer
or video game.
According to Brelis, parents are able
to go to groups such as KidSport Canada and Canadian Tires Jump Start program to receive small subsidies towards
sports fees.
Weve seen an increase in those over
the last couple of years and I think were
definitely on the same train this year,
he said. Were going to see more of
those than we have in previous years.
Brelis said that committees have been
really busy throughout the summer getting things done.
The association will focus on fundraising this year and will be looking
at various ways to create a fundraising

program to generate some yearly fundraising dollars to cover various things

such as new jerseys. The current jerseys
are coming to the end of their lifespan.
With the economy, we have to make
sure we have some money in the bank
to be able to cover the sponsors that
might not be able to help us out this
year or in the next couple years, said
Brelis.
After evaluations, the seeding round
will start around the second week of
October and run for approximately five
to six games. After that, the different
tiers will be finalized and the regular
season will start.
The association will run programs for
players from three years of age through
to 17 years, including Intro to Hockey
for beginners through to Timbit, novice,
atom, pee wee, bantam and midget.

It is with sadness that the family announces Bills passing on July 21, 2016 at the Calgary Foothills Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; and his 8 children,
Tracy(Ken), Scott(Jill), Jodi(Doug), Kelly(Melanie),
Katherine, Doreen(Jim), Dalynne(Ralph) and Darwin;
13 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, his brother
Cliff(Lynne), two uncles, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Bill retired from the Alberta Wheat Pool in 1998. He
was actively involved in hunting, hockey, curling, fastball and slow-pitch.
His Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday September 10, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the Carseland Community Hall in Carseland, Alberta on Railway Avenue
West.
After the service, a game of scrub ball will follow. If
you wish to participate, please bring your own equipment, road pop drink and chairs.
