MBBS NEWCASTLE VENESECTION GUIDELINES 2014 2015

Step 1. Wash hands with either alcohol gel or soap and water
Step 2. Preparation: Clean tray. Check availability of sharps bin. Collect the
following equipment into tray: (1) The appropriate specimen tubes, (2) The
correct sized vacutainer needle and needle-holder or needle and syringe,
(3) Clean tourniquet, (4) Non-sterile gloves, (5) Alcohol wipe, (6) Cotton
wool and (7) A plaster.
Step 3 Equipment assembly: Select the correct-sized needle and blood
collection system and attach these while protecting key parts using aseptic
non-touch technique without unsheathing the needle.
Step 4 Wash hands with either alcohol gel or soap and water ( NOT NEEDED if
equipment prepared in patient zone)
Step 5 Introduce self, identify patient, explain procedure and common risks,
check for allergies/needle phobia and check if patient has a preferred arm
for the procedure.
Step 6 Apply tourniquet above chosen site, ask patient to clench fist and palpate
for a suitable vein.
Step 7 Wash hands with either alcohol gel or soap and water (according to Trust
Policy) and put on non-sterile gloves.
Step 8 Clean skin with alcohol wipe for 30 seconds and allow to dry . DO NOT
REPALPATE THE VEIN.

Step 9 Carefully unsheathe needle holding it in dominant hand and stabilise vein
in downward direction below insertion site with non-dominant hand
keeping the needle within field of view.
Step 10 Push the needle bevel up steadily through the skin at an angle of 15-30
degrees (depending on site and size of vein).
Step 11 Hold the vacutainer needle-holder steady with one hand when in the
vein and anchor the needle into this position. DO NOT MOVE NEEDLE OR
NEEDLE-HOLDER.

Step 12 Insert specimen tubes into vacutainer pushing until the seal is pierced
and blood fills the tube. Draw specimens in appropriate order by repeating
as required. DO NOT MOVE NEEDLE-HOLDER WHEN REMOVING TUBES.
Step 13 Hold the vacutainer needle-holder steady with the same hand as before,
and use other hand to release tourniquet when all the specimens have
been collected. Hold the cotton swab over the site of insertion site of the
needle.
Step 14 Gently withdraw the needle along the line of insertion. Once completely
removed, apply pressure onto the insertion site using the cotton wool
swab. DO NOT APPLY PRESSURE ON THE SITE OF INSERTION BEFORE THE

NEEDLE IS FULLY WITHDRAWN.

Ask patient to press down on the site for 2

minutes.
Step 15 Place the vacutainer and needle immediately into the sharps box. DO
NOT DISASSEMBLE NEEDLE AND VACUTAINER.

Step 17 Check the insertion site for bleeding. Offer a plaster if the patient is not
allergic.
Step 18 Remove gloves and wash hands.
Step 19 Label the specimen tubes at patients bedside with the patients name,
date of birth and hospital number.
Step 20 Thank patient.
