Directions: Read each problem carefully to determine the correct answer. Remember
to answer all parts of each question.
1.) Mr. James bakes 3 rows of 4 cupcakes in a cupcake pan.
a. Draw an array that represents Mr. James cupcakes. Use an X to show each
cupcake.
b. Mr. James decides to bake more cupcakes. This time he adds 2 more rows of 4
cupcakes to his cupcake pan.
Use circles to show his new cupcakes on the array in Part (a).
Fill in the blanks below to show how he added the two rows.
________ fours + ________ fours = ________ fours
Write a complete sentence to explain your math thinking.
c. Find the total number of cupcakes that Mr. James baked.
d. Write a multiplication sentence to describe the array
representing the total number of cupcakes Mr. James baked.

2.) Mr. James bakes 20 chocolate chips cookies for his children. He
stores them in 5 plastic baggies.
a. Draw Mr. James plastic baggies with all the cookies.
b. Write a multiplication number sentence that describes your drawing in Part (a).
3.)
Mr. James bakes 15 miniature pies for a school fundraiser. He
packages the little pies into boxes of three.
a. Fill in the blanks below to make a true division sentence. What does the answer
represent?
_______ _______ = _______
The answer represents__________________________.
b. Mr. James adds 2 more boxes of miniature pies to his 3 original boxes. Draw an
array to show how many boxes of pies he has now.
c. Mr. James figured out how many miniature pies he baked. His work is shown in

Math Unit 1 Mid-Module Assessment
Dear Parent(s),
Your child will take short math quiz on _________________. This quiz will
be covering the topics weve learned so far in math. This is the midmodule (mid-unit) assessment, and is pretty short, with only three problems.
However, each problem has a few steps. Below are the tasks your child
will need to do on the quiz for each problem. Well practice of course in
class and review so everyone feels prepared, but any extra review at
home would be great!
Thanks for your continued support!
Tasks for this assessment include:
PROBLEM 1
Draw an array for a certain amount of objects
Example: Draw an array that shows 3 rows of four books.
Add additional rows to the array to show more of the objects
Example: Show 2 more rows of four books on the array.
Complete a number sentence to describe the array
Example: 3 fours + 2 fours = 5 fours
Write a sentence (in words) that explains their thinking
Example: We started with 3 rows of four and added 2 more rows of fours so thats
5 fours total.
Find the total number of objects
Example: There are 20 books total.
Write a multiplication sentence to represent the entire array
Example: 5 x 4 = 20
Lesson
PROBLEM 2
Draw groups of objects
Example: Draw Mrs. Smiths bags of marbles if she has three bags with 4 marbles
in each bag.
Write and solve a multiplication sentence for the drawing above
Example: 3 x 4 = 12
PROBLEM 3
Write a division sentence and explain what the answer represents
Example: Mrs. Smith puts 8 books on her bookcase. She places them on two
shelves. Write a division sentence and tell what the answer represents.
8
2 = 4 The answer means that Mrs. Smith has 4 books on
each shelf.
Draw an array to show how many there would be if objects were added
Example: Mrs. Smith decides to add five more shelves of books to her original two
shelves. Draw an array to show how many books she has now.
Look at an equation and explain why or why not a different equation could
represent the equation shown
Example: Mrs. Smith figured out how many books she put on her bookcase. Her
work is shown in the box below. Would Mrs. Smith get the same result if she
multiplied 6 x 4? Explain why or why not.
(2 x 4) + (5 x 4) = 8 + 20
= 28
Multiplying 6 x 4 will not give Mrs. Smith the same
answer because thats only 24. Shed have to
multiply 7 x 4 because there are 7 rows of 4 books.
