Why do we (including Biotech students) need to learn food science and technology?

1. Food processing is a modern practice that improves distributional efficiency and enhances the
marketing of the food products.
2. Methods and techniques are used to transform raw ingredients into food for safe consumption by
humans or animals.
3. The technology input to enhance preservation of food qualities (nutrition, flavour,
bioactive/functional compounds, etc) and to reduce the toxins (including harm and spoilage
microorganism) in the food product

advancing the science of food, ensuring a safe and abundant food supply, and contributing to
healthier people everywhere is integral to that evolution
Food scientists and technologists are versatile, interdisciplinary, and collaborative practitioners
in a profession at the crossroads of scientific and technological developments
to advance the science of food and the long-range vision to ensure a safe and abundant food
