Room 13

Scheme of Work

Year 8

Lesson 1
Starter: Pupils are to complete the table based on the details of the front
cover.
Main: Read Chapter 1 as a class group. Pupils then complete the Key words
and definition match up sheet, writing the examples in their books.
Plenary: Peer mark the answers to the key words and then pupils are to
make three predictions about they expect to happen in the novel based on the
first chapter and the front cover. Pupils need to give a reason for their ideas.
Homework: Pupils are to research why the number 13 is unlucky, due lesson
4.
Lesson 2
Starter: Pupils are to put the events of the dream from the first chapter into
the correct order.
Main: Read Chapter 2 & 3, pupils are to then complete the questions, writing
their answers in full sentences in their books.
Plenary: Peer mark the answers to the questions, giving effort levels.
Lesson 3
Starter: Pupils are to describe what they would do if they had only three
minutes left to live.
Main: Read Chapter 4 & 5, pupils are to then complete the table based on the
repetition of ideas in chapter 1. Pupils are to find quotes to show the links
between ideas.
Plenary: Peer mark the quotes activity. Pupils are to then correct the spelling
mistakes in Lisas apology letter, giving her three targets to reach a higher
level.
Lesson 4
Starter: Pupils are to share their homework ideas why number 13 is unlucky.
Main: Read Chapters 6 & 7, pupils will have the following piece of work
assessed. Pupils have to write two postcards, describing the hotel as a
wonderful/awful place to stay. Pupils will need the writing guide and
assessment criteria.
Plenary: Pupils are to pair the adjective antonyms in their books.
Homework: To complete the assessment. Due lesson 7.
Lesson 5 ICT Activity
Starter: Jigsaw activity. Pupils will complete the first worksheet independently,
finding information on each of the topics; Captain Cooks Monument, Whitby,
Moby Dick and Lord Nelson.
Main: In groups of four, pupils will then put this information on one sheet,
picking out the most relevant/interesting points about one particular area.
Plenary: Pupils will present this information to the rest of their class.
Lesson 6
Starter: Match the map symbols to the correct description.
Main: Read Chapter 8. Pupils will then complete the A3 independent learning
sheet based on a map of the places visited by the characters.

Plenary: Pupils will complete a cloze exercise of the places the characters
have visited by inserting adverbs.
Lesson 7 Homework due in
Starter: Recap techniques for creating tension in writing.
Main: Read Chapter 9. Pupils are to find quotes to show areas where tension
techniques have been used in this chapter. Transform a boring text using the
tension techniques and any other devices listed to create a lively and creative
text.
Plenary: Peer mark, giving targets for improvement.
Lesson 8
Starter: Recap the events of Chapter 9 by writing down an introductory
paragraph covering the who, what, why, where and when the events
happened.
Main: Read Chapter 10, pupils are to then produce a newspaper article based
on the headless girl using the writing guide.
Plenary: Pupils are to revise how to use speech marks.
Lesson 9
Starter: Recap words: antonym, verb, informal and formal language,
Main: Independent reading activities based on Chapter 11.
Plenary: Peer mark answers to activities and reward each other with a target
and effort grade.
Homework: Revise a part of Chapter 12 given to read for next lesson.
Lesson 10
Starter: Revise how levels can be achieved by using different writing
techniques. Pupils are given a technique each, then they have to put
themselves in the correct level corner, either 3, 4, 5 or 6.
Main: Read Chapter 12 as a class, each child given their section for reading.
Pupils are to then complete the independent reading activities.
Plenary: Pupils are to peer mark their own work and are to then level one of
the diaries of the characters.
Lesson 11
Starter: Conventions of a script
Main: Read Chapter 14, pupils are to then write their own script to describe
the conversation between David and one of his friends. Will they believe him
or not?
Plenary: Spelling test, peer marked.
Homework: Pupils are to complete their script neatly on paper for lesson 14.
Lesson 12
Starter: Connectives activity
Main: Read Chapters 15 & 16, cover perspective and write a mini diary based
on the events from the perspective of different characters; either Mr Hepworth
or Ellie-May.
Plenary: Peer Mark, listen to perspectives.

Lesson 13
Starter: Transform simple sentences into complex sentence using either
connectives or commas.
Main: Read Chapter 17 & 18; create a level 5 piece of writing from a simple
diary. Begin by giving targets, pupils work in pairs to achieve these targets by
transforming or inserting parts of the text. Weaker pupils will need to have a
device bank- like a bank similes, personification, alliteration, etc. from which
they can pick and choose ideas from.
Plenary: Pupils swap their work with another pair and use the tick list to see if
they have produced a level 5.
Lesson 14 Homework due in
Starter: Pupils are to pair up to practise their scripts, choosing which is the
most successful.
Main: Pupils will complete a performance of their script.
Plenary: Evaluation of their performance and effort grade.
Lesson 15 Range of activities possible, fossils, ICT or coastguard leaflet
Starter: Possibility pupils may have to do evaluations. If they were completed
last lesson, pupils will carry on with prep for ICT activity.
Lesson 16
Starter: Memory game? Beach/English ICT game
Main: Read Chapters 19 & 20, pupils are to complete questions in full
sentences.
Plenary: Peer mark questions and prepare for homework.
Homework: Write a diary entry describing a day at the beach. Due Lesson
19.
Lesson 17
Starter: Adverbs and Adjectives wordsearch based on homework.
Main: Read Chapter 21-22 independently, pupils are to then complete the
tasks.
Plenary: Pupils are to create complex sentences using the words from the
wordsearch based on their homework.
Lesson 18 ICT Activity
Starter: Read half of Chapter 23, up to page 123.
Main: Pupils are to complete the ComputerQuest based on the beachfront.
Plenary: This will be a part of the ComputerQuest.
Lesson 19: Homework due in
Starter: Evaluation of ICT activity.
Main: Read the rest of Chapter 23 and produce a storyboard based on the
past events of the hotel.
Plenary: Peer mark homework.
Lesson 20
Starter: Create a mini story using a torch, rock, pebble and kite.

Main: Read Chapter 24, write a letter of complaint to the company owners
about a dodgy item.
Plenary: Read letters and give an effort grade.
Lesson 21: ICT Activity
Starter: Homophones for the words where, were, were
Main: Read Chapter 25 and create a poster for the disco using the planning
sheet.
Plenary: Pupils print off work and pupils are to put a sticker on the best
posters, and then discuss what features the best one was awarded.
Lesson 22
Starter: Evaluation of ICT activity
Main: Read Chapter 26, pupils create a scene of what will be in room 13
using cardboard/shoebox.
Plenary: Pupils present ideas to the rest of the class.
Lesson 23
Starter: Pupils are going to read a cloze version of the ultimate chapter,
aiming to figure out what the missing words are.
Main: Pupils can then listen to the final version, and then Chapter 28.
Plenary: Pupils are to look at their past effort grades and targets, then they
will write down their overall grade for the work completed on the novel and
three targets.
Lesson 24+
Pupils will be completing a Hotel Project where they will design the following
for The Crows Nest hotel:
Logo
Leaflet
Letter to headteacher describing the reasons why pupils should stay there
Menus
Local places to visit
Stationary/letter heads
A business card
