Observation Task 2: Teaching A Phonics Lesson

The teacher taught a phonics lesson where she introduced a letter sound by showing a flashcard and making the sound and action for the letter. She had the children watch a video to hear the letter sound in words and recognize it. Then the teacher wrote the letter on the board while saying the writing steps, and had the children trace and write the letter in a worksheet. The lesson focused on teaching the sound and writing of a letter, and engaged the children through activities like puzzles, writing, and sorting letters. During centers, the children reinforced the lesson through art projects making the letter shape and reading stories about the letter.

Table 2: Teaching a Phonics Lesson

The Structure of the Lesson
What the teacher does

What the children do

Introducing the Sound:

The teacher shows them a flashcards
of the letter and make the sound with
the action of it.
Hearing the Sound in the initial
position:
- Video with objects and Repeat
the first sound in the words
when they hear from the
music video of the letter.

The children say the sound of

the letter and did the action of
it

Its good way to help children

to remember the sound
through the action.

Children heard the sounds of

the letter from the video
song. They start to recognize
how it is sounds like.

Its a very good way that can

target children attention.
Moreover, children who like to
learn by visual and with
listening, they will enjoy it
more.

Introducing the Writing of the Sound:

The children observe the

teacher writing the letters
with saying the steps on the
air, hand and the ground.

I think if the teacher ask

children to come in the board
to write the letter, it would be
more benefit for them rather
than drawing on air only.

Children trace the sound of

the letter and write it in the
worksheet.

I think its a good activity but I

think if the teacher gave them
other activity to write rather
than using worksheet. She
could use clay instead.

She writes the sound of the letter on

the board with making the action of it.
for example, the letter A. the teacher
said go uu, go down and straight
line.
Practicing Writing the Sound:
The teacher gave them worksheets to
trace and write the letter.
