1. A rectangular slot aperture antenna of dimensions a x b is mounted into an infinite perfect conducting ground plane, as
shown in the following figure, with a = 2 and b = 6. If the antenna is excited with a y-directed E-field which has
uniform amplitude and phase across its aperture, the time-harmonic far-field E-fields (E and E) are given by

2. An elliptically polarized wave is traveling in the z -direction and has an electric field at z = 0 given by:
E= x 5 cos t /6 y 3 cos t / 2
(a) Determine:
(i) the axial ratio;
(ii) the polarization tilt angle with respect to the y-axis;
(iii) the ratio of the cross-polarization to co-polarized E-field of this wave; and
(iv) whether it is clockwise or counterclockwise.
(b) Determine the latitude and longitude (in degrees) of this polarization on the Poincar sphere.
(c) Calculate the polarization loss factor if the receive antenna is:
(i) Linearly polarized in the vertical (y-axis) direction;
(ii) Linearly polarized in the horizontal (x-axis) direction;
(iii) Clockwise circular polarized; and
(iv) Counterclockwise circular polarized.

A military base uses an 12 GHz, 6 kW pulsed monostatic radar to detect any incoming aircraft. The radar uses a right
hand elliptically polarized antenna characterized by a gain of 20 dB, an axial ratio of 3 dB, and a tilt angle of 30 from
the vertical. An enemy aircraft with stealth technology approaches the military base. The stealth technology absorbs all
vertically (y-directed) polarized signals and scatters all horizontal (x-directed) signals with a radar cross section of
2.0 m2. If the radar receiver has a sensitivity of -110 dBm, determine the maximum range at which the bomber can be
detected. Assume that there are no losses between the antenna and receiver.
6.
A system for a set of land mobile beacon signals operating at a centre frequency of 10 GHz with a fractional bandwidth
of 5% uses an antenna with a gain of 10 dBi and that has a normalized radiation pattern given by:
4
6
U ,= sin cos , 0 , /2 /2 [W /]
0 , elsewhere
The antenna, which has a thermal efficiency of 90%, is connected to a receiver by a 5 m long cable that has an insertion
loss of 0.1 dB/m. Both the antenna and cable are located outdoors where the ambient temperature is 25 C, while the
receiver is located in an air-conditioned enclosure kept at 10 C, so that its noise temperature is 350 K. The beacon
signals are emitted with an EIRP of 12 dBW. The antenna is located in a somewhat noisy environment, resulting in a
noise temperature at the antenna given by:
T B = 300cos K , 02
Determine both the minimum and maximum distances within a 90 coverage sector i.e. between /4 /4
of the antenna that the beacon signal can be detected, if the minimum signal-to-noise ratio at the receiver is 10 dB.
Assume that the receiver and transmitter antenna are polarization matched.
7.
To determine the gain and polarization purity of your antenna prototype, you have available a circular-polarized gain
standard, whose gain is 20 dBic, and a linearly polarized transmit antenna, whose gain is 12 dBi. When the gain standard
and transmit antenna are connected, you measure a receive power of -30 dBm. You then replace the gain standard with
the prototype antenna and you measure the receive power as a function of the orientation of the transmit antenna. The
receive power varies from -36 dBm to -32 dBm. Determine the co-polarized and cross-polarized gain (in dBic) of the
prototype antenna.
