Educational philosophy and your teaching


I believe that education is a personal experience for every student who enters my
classroom. I believe that each child is a unique individual with the potential to bring something
new to the world. Every child has talents and gifts that needs to be explored and developed in
order to achieve their full potential. In my classroom, my students will be able to grow
emotionally, socially and intellectually as I will create a safe, supporting, nurturing, stimulating,
accepting and motivating environment. There are three factors that I believe will play a major
role in making my classroom a place of learning and achievement. The first one is my role as a
mentor and a guide, the second one is giving the students the opportunity to express themselves
and be active participant in their journey of learning and the third one is to teach children to have
social skills and learn to live in community.
Indeed, my primary role is to guide and mentor my students through the learning process
and through their growth. I believe getting to know each student in my classroom is essential to
creating an atmosphere of trust and respect. I believe that by recognizing and valuing my
students culture, I will be able to utilize that knowledge to link the topic that I am teaching to
what they know. Every student in my classroom is equally important to me and all of them
deserve my full attention. I will learn my students unique learning style so I can cater to it and
help them reach their potential. I will have high expectations for each one of them so they know I
believe in their abilities to learn and achieve.
The second factor is to give the students an opportunity to express themselves. Each one
of my student will be equally active participants in the classroom. I believe the teacher is not the
only one talking in the classroom. It should be a conversation. My students need to construct
their knowledge through questioning, hands-on activities, and through practicing the concepts

learned in real situation. To some extent I am a believer of the progressivism philosophy. I


believe the content that I teach in the classroom needs to be a preparation for their life outside the
classroom. As stated in the textbook: Content, which historically was an end to itself, now
became a tool to solve real-life problems. (p160)
The last factor to create a safe, accepting classroom is for me to teach my students social
skills, acceptance and appreciation for other cultures and people. I believe my classroom is the
place for my students to learn to accept people no matter their backgrounds or cultures and no
matter what their learning abilities or disabilities are. I will help my students understand that
every student is unique and has something to offer. I will teach them to appreciate each others
cultures and traditions by celebrating them in the classroom. To create an atmosphere of support
and mutual aid, I will organize mixed learning groups and cooperative learning activities. These
activities will help emphasize patience, acceptance and compassion. As Theodore Brameld said:
The human race can either annihilate itself through conflicts and weapons or can create a
human and just society through technology and compassion. I believe I can include the social
reconstructionism philosophy by the way I run and manage my classroom and the conflicts that
arise. According to Kaushak and Eggen: Teachers and students should serve as agents for
creating this just society.
I believe that I will make a great difference in each one of my students life as I will apply
these different philosophies in my classroom. I strongly believe that each student who comes
through the door of my classroom is entitled to a quality education in a safe and positive, conflict
free environment. I will make sure that my students know how much I believe in each one of
them and how much I believe in their abilities to succeed in life.
