PAPER 1
(1 hour and 30 minutes)
Instructions to candidates:
DO NOT OPEN THIS QUESTION PAPER UNTIL YOU ARE TOLD TO DO SO.
Answer all questions in Section A. Marks will not be deducted for wrong answers. For each
question, four suggested answers are given. Choose the correct answer and shade the
corresponding letter on the objective answer sheet provided.
Answer all questions in Section B. Write your answers in the spaces provided.
Answer two questions only in Section C. You may answer all the questions but, only the first
two answers will be marked. Write the answers in the answer sheets provided. All working
should be shown. For numerical answers, units should be quoted wherever appropriate. Begin
each answer on a fresh answer sheet.
Values of constants are provided on last page in this question paper.

(c) If the time of collision is 0.50 s, calculate the impulsive force acting on the objects
during the collision.

17.
The graph below shows the variation of stress with strain for a certain material until the
breakig point. The sample used in the experiment is a wire of length 2.00 m and diamter
1.00 mm.

18. A bead of mass 10.0 g slides without friction around a loop-the-loop as shown in the
diagram below. The bead is released from a height h and then moves in a vertical circular
track of radius 20.0 cm.
(a) At the highest point of the circle, A, the reaction force acting on the bead is almost
equal to zero and the bead is just able to move in a complete circle
(i) Determine the speed of the bead at the highest point, A
[3]
(ii) Calculate the minimum height, h the bead must be released so that it can move in a
complete circle.
[3]
(iii) Calculate the reaction force acting on the bead at the lowerst point of the circle.
[3]
(b) If the bead is released at height h = 40.0 cm,
(i) derive an expression for the speed of the bead at the position B in term of the angle
with the vertical.
[2]
(ii) Sketch a diagram to show the forces acting on the bead at position B. [1]
(iii) Calculate the value of angle where the bead will set into a projectile motion.
[3]
19. (a) A satellite of mass m is orbiting the Earth of mass M in a circular orbit of radius r.
(i) Derive an expression for the total energy, E of the satellite in terms of G, M, m
and r.
[4]
(ii) On the same axis of r, sketch graphs to show the variation of the kinetic energy,
K, the potential energy, U and the total energy E of the satellite with the radius r of
the orbit.
[3]
(iii) Using the graph above, explain what happens to the kinetic energy and potential
energy of the satellite if the total energy of the satellite is lost by E . [2]
(b) The International Space Station is orbiting the Earth in an orbit at altitude 400 km.
(i)
(ii)
(iii)
20. (a) State the conditions for a rigid body acted by forces to be in static equilibrium.
[2]
(b) A uniform ladder of length 15.0 m and weight 500 N rests against a frictionless
wall. The ladder makes an angle 60o with the horizontal floor.
(i) Find the horizontal and vertical forces that the ground exerts on the base of the
ladder when a firefighter of weight 800 N is 4.00 meters from the bottom along the
ladder.
[4]
(ii) If the ladder is just on the verge of slipping when the firefighter is 9.00 m up the
ladder, determine the coefficient of static friction between the ladder and the ground.
[3]
(c) The system in the diagram below is in equilibrium with the string in the center exactly
horizontal.
Find (i) tension T1, T2 , and T3
(ii) angle .
