My Experience : Design Thinking Is A Methodology Used by Designers To Solve

Ramesh Kumar Singh describes his experience in a design thinking class where students were tasked with using design thinking methodology to solve transportation problems on campus. The class explored various ideation techniques to generate ideas and ultimately proposed developing an app with a database of public transportation options like bus schedules and contact information for auto rickshaw drivers. Feedback on the proposed solution was positive. Ramesh reflects that design thinking provides a systematic approach to innovation and problem solving that can be applied to challenges both in school and society.

My Experience
Design Thinking is a methodology used by designers to solve
complex
problems,
and
find
desirable
solutions
for
clients. Design
Thinking draws upon logic, imagination,
intuition, and systemic reasoning, to explore possibilities of what
could be, and to create desired outcomes that benefit the end
user.
Our design thinking class started on 15/02/2016 and the first class
mainly focus on the introduction of the topic and how it is used to
creatively solve problems. Our discussion started by defining
innovation in our own terms and then choosing a problem that we
face in our campus and finally trying to find a solution using
Design Thinking.
In the starting the problem where very vague and we needed to
find the very aspects of the problem and find its solution in
different ways. Those ways are:
1) Child-like Ideation In this we need to think ourselves as a
child and then try to find five solution to the stated problem
like a child will do in the given time limit.
2) Zero-budget Ideation In this we need to think ourselves
running on tight budget and then think about five solution of
the problem.
3) Ideation In this we need to find five solution to the problem
in the logical manner in the specified time limit.
4) Superpower Ideation In this we need to think ourselves as
superheros and then think of the solution to the problem in
given time limit.

5) Billionaire Ideation In this we need to think ourselves as

billionaire and then think to the solution of the problem in
five different ways.
After going through all this process we were told to define a
problem statement. This was the difficult part for us and though
we know that our vague problem is Transportation we were
not sure how to define a problem statement that can encompass
all or at least most of the aspects of the problem. Finally after a
lot of brainstorming we came up with a problem statement with
some insights from DISHA MAM.
Next we needed to segregate all the Ideation into various group
and see if we could put all these into some meaningful sense.
After segregation of all the Ideation we were left with three major
group:
1) Public Transportation In this idea we thought that we can
convince people to walk for 2 km up to the highway and then
from there they can catch a bus or an auto and then can
leave to the city any time they want.
2) Private Transportation In this idea we thought that we can
arrange a mini bus with the large bus that we have and then
sub divide the going students into small groups according to
the timings they want to leave.
3) Partnership In this idea we thought to go into partnership
with the SIT students and ask them if they can extend their
bus timing and reach with us to a consensus on it.
After the generation of ideas we went to test the responses of
other students to the idea given to us. We interviewed five
colleagues and note down there responses and all these
responses where then divided into FEEDBACK CAPTURE GRID.
FEEDBACK CAPTURE GRID is future divided into four quadrants
i.e. Positives, Constructive criticism, Questions and Ideas. It was

very much difficult for our group to subdivide the responses into
this quadrant and even after dividing the responses we were not
able to reach to anything concreate and were stuck there thinking
where to proceed from here. While we were pondering on all the
points that we have generated, our mind stuck to a IDEA that was
given to us by one of the colleague, which was to generate the
database of all the share auto drivers who stay nearby.
We thought that this is the idea that we can take forward and
then we started thinking aligned to this idea that in order to
create a database we need to have a software were we can feed
the data. With software we took it one step forward and though
why cant we just make an app that will have all the information
about the public transport services like the bus and the auto. We
can get the bus timing from the bus depo and can get the info
about the variability in the bus services by asking the nearby Teashop. After that we thought that we can ask the phone number of
various auto Walas that are there in the vicinity and can get their
address registered in the database in order to ensure the safety of
the students.
After putting all these thoughts in place we presented our findings
and solution to the class and ask them about their feedback. Our
colleagues were very much happy to hear the solution that is
provided by us and were thinking if we can implement all this as
soon as possible.
In all, my key learning in all this process was that if we put in a
systematic approach to the generation of ideas and learn to
channelize them into solution using Design Thinking then it can
really be a great guide for us in the future innovation process.
I think I can use design thinking in solving one of the problem that
I face as of now of Transportation. I think I can also use design
thinking to solve many of the problems that I face in home and
benefitting the society that I live in. For Example: In the society
that I live in we have a problem of sewage, I am thinking to use

design thinking with the help of the society members and use it to
see if we can reach to the solution of the problem.
Having said that I really think that Design Thinking class was
really a wonderful and rich experience, even the approach to
teach design thinking was good as we really got the practical
experience to put in the use of Design Thinking. And I really do
believe that it will become a powerful tool to solve problem in the
near future.
