EGME 407 Syllabus

This document outlines the syllabus for EGME 407 - Heat Transfer taught in Spring 2017. The course will be taught by Dr. Darren Banks on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00-2:15pm in room E-201. The textbook is Introduction to Heat Transfer by Bergman et al. and attendance is required but not graded. The course will cover principles of heat transfer including conduction, convection, and radiation through lectures, homework, quizzes, and two midterms culminating in a cumulative final exam. Grades are based on exams, homework, and quizzes.

Course Catalog Description:

Principles of heat transfer and their applications: introduction to conductive, convective and
radiation heat transfer; one-dimensional heat conduction; concepts of multi-dimensional
conduction; convective heat transfer for internal and external viscous flows; cross-flow and shell
and tube heat exchangers; thermal system design.
Prerequisites:

MATH 250B, EGME 333

Textbook (Required):

Introduction to Heat Transfer, 6th edition, by T. Bergman, A.

Lavine, F. Incropera, D. DeWitt; Wiley, 2011.
Older versions of this textbook are acceptable. You are
responsible for any differences if using a previous edition.

Course Policies:
Attendance and Attention
Attendance to each class session is required but is not part of the grade criteria. If you
miss a class session, you are responsible to cover any material you missed.
Exams
All exams are cumulative from the beginning of the course. The final exam grade may be
used to increase the midterm grades by of the difference between them (Example
below). Grades will only be increased by this method, not decreased. Exams will be closed
book and closed notes.
Example: Scoring 80% on the midterm, and 90% on the final, will increase the
score on the midterm by of the difference (10%), giving an effective grade of
85% on the midterm.
Extra Credit
Extra credit will not be offered.

Homework and Quizzes

Homework is generally due at the beginning of class seven days after it is assigned. Late
homework will not be accepted. Solutions to homework assignments will be posted
following the class session where it is due. Instructor-selected problems from the
homework will be graded. Homework may require MATLAB.
Quizzes will be based on the previous homework assignment. The lowest quiz score will
be dropped.
Reading
Reading the assigned sections prior to or following the corresponding lecture will improve
understanding of the material it may answer questions from the lecture or bring up
questions to follow up on. Get the most out of the textbook and out of the class by reading!
Classroom Behavior
Please silence your cell phones and any other electronics while in the classroom.
Do not be disruptive during class.
If you are coming to class late, please take a seat quietly near the door to avoid disturbing
your classmates. If you need to leave class early, the same rule applies.
Student Integrity
Abide by the Universitys code of academic conduct. Academic dishonesty will result in a
zero on the assignment and referral to Student Conduct, at a minimum. Academic
dishonesty includes but is not limited to cheating, inventing information or falsifying
citations, plagiarism, or assisting another person at committing an act of academic
dishonesty. Additional information can be found in University Policy Statement 300.021.
Ignorance of these policies does not excuse violations thereof.
Emergency Policies
Be aware of what must be done if an emergency occurs. The university has provided
guidelines and suggestions at Emergency Preparedness. In an emergency, call 911 or
campus police at (657) 278-3333.
Accommodation for Special Needs
Please inform the instructor as soon as reasonably possible of any accommodations
needed. Ideally, email the instructor to set up an appointment within the first week of the
semester. For more information, contact Disability Support Services.
TITANium
Course announcements, this syllabus, assignments, and supplemental material will be
posted to TITANium. Ensure you have access to the course page and check it often.

Re-grading
If an assignments is returned and you feel you have received your grade in error, submit
a written explanation of the error and the assignment to the instructor within one week of
the assignment being returned. Requests without the written explanation, or more than a
week after the assignment has been returned, will be ignored.
Concerns
If you have a concern about completing an assignment, missing class, or any other
concerns pertaining to this course, please feel free to speak to me or email me and we
will decide a course of action. The sooner in advance you bring up an issue, the more
