1. Uganda is divided into four main linguistic groups with several ethnic groups. The largest is the Buganda group at 16% of the population. 2. Britain and Germany colonized Uganda in the late 1800s, fighting over control of Buganda. After independence in 1962, Uganda experienced dictatorship and violence for decades that killed hundreds of thousands. Stability increased when Museveni became leader in 1986. 3. If able to change borders, the author would combine Uganda Colony with the British East African Colony for improved trade access. A democratic form of government would be established instead of one-ruler system to give citizens more input and reduce violence.

Correcting the Borders of Africa
Part 1: Uganda
Uganda is divided into four main linguistic groups, the Bantu, Central Sudanic, Nilotic,
Kuliak. Within each of those groups there are several ethnic groups throughout the colony of
Uganda. Buganda makes up the largest ethnic group in Uganda, representing about 16% of the
population.

Part 2:
Colonization of Uganda started in the late 1800s by Britain. Britain and Germany were
fighting over Buganda (later a large part of Uganda). After colonization in Uganda civil war
breaks out. Over the next decades fighting continues until the Uganda Protectorate was formed in
1894. Also, the Europeans taught African farmers to grow cotton which becomes prosperous.
This area has not been stable because Uganda wants to have governing power by the Kabaka (the
King of Buganda). An imbalance of politics continues in Uganda. In 1962 Britain grants Uganda
independence and full self-government. For the following two decades, dictatorship of leaders
that terrorize their people lead to torture and murder of hundreds of thousands of Ugandans. In
1986 there was a turning point in Ugandas government when Museveni became the leader and
the National Resistance Army was in control. Even know this was a one party rule,
improvements in education, health, and transport had been improved.

Part 3:
If I could go back in time to change and correct the borders, I would first speak with the
leaders of the countries in Uganda. By speaking with the leaders, I could gain a better
understanding of the geography of the land and to help with maintaining the trade and farming. If
I could change the borders, I would combine Uganda Colony with the British East African
Colony. The benefits to doing this would be the New Uganda would both have access to both the
Indian Ocean and the Lakes, which would be good for trade. As far as the government goes, I
would have a Democracy rather than a one ruler system so the people of Africa would have more
input on the decisions made for their country. I think by having this form of government, it
would lead to less violence. The new borders border Ethiopia which is good because Ethiopia
was one of the only countries that was not colonic during the scramble.
Part 4:
This activity relates to class as an example of how different cultures struggle for
independence. It shows how outside countries can ruin culture, and the economy due to greed.
An example of hunting out of greed is that they made game reserves and let tourists and sport
hunters come in and pay them money to shoot and kill their animals. This resulted is less farm
land and animals valuable to Africans for food, clothes, shelter, etc.
