English Poetry of 30

The English poetry of the 1930s was represented by a group of socially conscious poets led by W.H. Auden. This group, which included C. Day Lewis, Stephen Spender, and Louis MacNeice, addressed social and political issues in their works. The economic depression, Spanish Civil War, and onset of WWII led them to seriously consider literature's relationship to politics and social conditions. Their poetry reflected a deep sense of gloom over the difficulties of the time and focused on the suffering caused by the economic depression.
