Philosophy of Technology
1. Define what you mean by technology
Based on my own experiences of teaching and learning with technology, I believe
technology is a vehicle to transport individuals in the community (teachers and students)
to countless, exciting learning adventures beyond the classroom. Individuals who are able
to effectively use technological tools and implement technology in their day-to-day lives
are able to collaborate and learn with other individuals and use resources on a level not
possible without technology.
2. Articulate how technology does or does not fit within your theoretical framework of
teaching
I believe that technology does fit within my theoretical framework of teaching.
Looking back when we did the Technology Framework assignment. I mentioned, how I
believe that SAMR and TPACK resonated the most with me and my approach in
integrating technology. Based on my own personal experiences with technology in the
classroom. I can see the process of substituting, augmenting, modifying, and redefining
as I went into older grades and as my interaction with technology increased (Schrock,
2017). I was also introduced to something that looked like the TPACK framework in a
different class, but it was not related to technology. Through my teaching experiences,
technology has been incorporated somehow into my students learning. Some examples
of how technology was incorporated into my teaching are when students are asked to
write a story. My students are given the option of how they want to present their story
(handwritten or typed on a computer), this represents substituting as those students who
elect to submit a typed story are substituting their presentation format. Students
demonstrate augmentation as the computer allows them to perform the same writing task
that is given to the whole class instead of using a pencil and paper. The level of
modification enables students on the computer to change the font sizes and include
pictures from online resources onto their paper. Redefinition was demonstrated by my
students as they are able to share their documents with one another to easily edit each
other's stories. TPACK is also reflected in my teaching method as I work with my
students by the overlapping of the different framework sections, technological,
pedagogical, and content knowledge (mkoehler, 2012). As a teacher, it is important for
me to have knowledge of the topic that I will be teaching my students. For example, if the
topic is plants then I need to know the growing process of plants. I will also need to know
pedagogically, the different process that I want to approach when teaching my students.
Following this, I will incorporate my teaching approach through technology, by showing
my students videos and diagrams to support my students to better their understanding.
3. Provide evidence that technology is effective/ineffective for learning
Effective for learning:

A way to communicate with ELL students or to students with disabilities (Personal experience).
Many technological devices include translators or have translator apps that can help students to
communicate with one another. For example, Google translator and Skype translator.
Easy way to check or track students progress. Teachers can use tools to help record their
students success and challenges to better support them. In the Jennie Magiera video, a quote that
stood out to me was When things are changing, we need to evaluate if it is even making a
difference and better; qualitatively changing experience (Learning, 2015). As a future teacher, it
is important to evaluate my students progress, but I need to make sure that what I teacher will
make positive changes. By using technology, I believe that it will help me to by creating
authentic learning for all of my students. Some ways to track students progress are Class Dojo,
Kahoot, and Google Classroom.
Making sure to state the objective of the specific activity. From my own personal experiences of
teaching, I believe that this is important for teachers to do as it helps everyone in the classroom
to stay focused. And if the class gets off topic, having the objective up on the board helps to
refocus the students.
Ineffective for learning:
When there is no specific objective or target goal for students to achieve. By having no target or
wanted outcome, students and the teacher have not goal that they would want to achieve during a
lesson. This would promote chaos and confusion in the classroom causing there to be no progress
in learning.
Use of specific technology can fail (no batteries, no charger, issues with wifi, etc.). By using
technology, it requires the use of energy. Teachers who use technology must be ready with back-
ups incase technology ever decides to fail. It is important for teachers to have backup batteries,
chargers, and iPads or laptops. It is also necessary to have a working wifi system when using
technology.
Can cause distraction to students who are bored or unfamiliar with the technology. With the use
of technology and learning, students can somehow find a way to get bored and distracted.
Students who are using technology can become bored with the given task and decide to do
something else on the iPad or laptop. It is important for the teacher to have disciplinary/behavior
management actions ready to use to refocus the student. In the Jennie Magiera video, she states
Compliance does not mean engagement (Learning, 2015). Through this quote from her, it is
important that as teachers, we give student the opportunity to learn and explore, but we need to
provide the right strategies and tools when using technology.
4. Indicate any circumstances where technology should or should not be used, and why
Should be used:
Technology is becoming a part of students world. They use it when they are at school and at
home. By providing appropriate and educational learning apps, this allows students to use these
apps when they are at home to continue their learning.

Allows students to practice using technology to become more familiar when they use it in their
future careers. This can be by introducing students to useful educational resources that they can
use for school or work. For example, Google Docs, Youtube, and Skype Translator.
Allows students to share their thinking with one another, the community, and the world. The
article by Jacqui Murray states that, Technology understands other perspectives. Sure, this can
be done through conversation and class presentations, but doing it through blogging, comments,
discussion boards, is bigger. Plus, as student share their perspective, they can edit and rewrite to
be sure the words fully reflect their ideas (Murray). Technology opens a new world for many
students, whether it may be through presentation of communicating with one another. Again, this
can be by introducing students to apps that help them connect to one another. For example, e-
mails, skype, and quizlet.live.
Should not be used:
A method to keep students occupied. Again, have a target for the use of the technology. For
example, if youre doing math and the student is done with the assignment, have them do math
problems on the iPad.
To decrease interaction between the class. Technology should be used to build a community and
to continue to see and learn each others thinking
When the given assignment isnt relevant to the use of technology. For example, when doing an
art lesson on acrylic paint. Students should not be using an app with painting. Students should
be participating by actually painting with the acrylic paint.
5. Describe how technology can facilitate or be a barrier to family engagement
Technology can facilitate family engagement by connecting them, learning, and
practice. Family engagement can help connect families by promoting learning. Coming
from an immigrant family, technology has helped us grow closer together by keeping in
contact with one another. The use of cell phones, Skype videos, and snapchat help us
keep up to date with one another. Another way that technology can facilitate family
engagement is by helping families learn. As I work with families who are English
language learners, using technology helps them learn to speak, write, and read in English.
With apps and computer programs that contain translators and text-as-you-read usage,
this helps the individual to learn what one word is in one culture and what it is in another.
The individual is also able to listen how to say the specific word. A third way that
technology can help with family engagement is through practice. There are many
different fun and educational game apps that people can download onto their
technological devices. These games can then be played for fun and as group. This can
promote closeness and engagement.
Technology can also be a barrier by affecting communication. In my parents
house, we are not allowed to text or call one another if the person we are trying to reach
is also at home. I believe that this is important for families to avoid doing as this can
affect the closeness of the family. In Suzanne Bouffards article, she explained how

Internet-based communication also presents challenges. Websites and email contact can
be difficult for schools to maintain, may intimidate some families, and lack visual and
nonverbal cues (e.g., tone of voice or body language) (Bouffard, 2008). Although
technology can have its upside, technology can be difficult for families to communicate
and use. For example, sarcasm may not be understood for some families.
