What exactly is RTI?
RTI consists of three tiers that are responses to students deficits in
learning
TIER 1: Group intervention, differentiation and high quality whole class
instruction - constant assessment & screening tests
TIER 2: Small group intervention, targeted in a certain area of deficit,
students tend to stay here longer, done in addition to classroom
instruction, high quality instruction from highly qualified instructor
TIER 3: Students receive individualized intervention, often very
targeted quality instructions from highly qualified instructor

Student Support
RTI is intended to determine which students are struggling and may need
additional support with learning and behavior needs in various settings
Whole Group - Tier 1, Small Group - Tier 2, Individual - Tier 3
When implemented properly students who may be struggling will be given the
extra support in the specific areas they are having trouble
Teachers and other staff who may be working with the student are supporting them
throughout interventions - information will be explained at the student's level
Families & Communities
Parents have an impact on students performance: negative or
positive
Parents should be informed at their students needs and their
progress
Parents should be told how they can further help their student
at home and with additional tutoring found in the community,
and education opportunities need to be provided for parents
who may be lacking
This is a necessary part of RTI, without parent involvement, RTI
is not being implemented correctly
Implementation Issues
Often times RTI is not implemented correctly
No guarantee there is effective instruction
Teacher aids are used for intervention
Tier 2 and 3 are not done in addition to regular instruction
time
There isnt change in type of instruction
Used for SPED students, not all students
Where Should You Begin Implementation?
No single method - based on individual needs
Initially:
May take 2-3 years
Identify students needing RTI (grade level, subject, or entire school)
Identify PD needs and tech assistance
Create a plan
Implement the plan
Determine the results to see impacts of the designed plan - Data Days (4 times/year)
Each year data should be analysed to determine benefits of RTI
implementation and what can be done for the following year to identify needs
and focuses for the following year
