learning. Students need to be able to identify why reading and writing
are important in order to buy-in to the class.

Students complete name cards & syllabus scavenger hunt as warm-up

Welcome to Spanish 1. My name is <INSERT NAME> and I am

your Spanish 1 teacher. Remember, this is your last chance to
make a first impression as a student. The Warm-up says 1-Pick
up 3 items at the materials table. 2- Find a seat silently. 3- Fold
paper & write name on namecard in big letters. 4-Start the
syllabus scavenger hunt.

You have (5 minutes left) for the syallabus scavenger hunt. I

expect this to be done quickly and silently. We don’t waste time
in here. Every minute matters in this class.

Pencils down, eyes on me. Introduce self again (where from,

where went to school, where taught over the summer). I look
forward to getting to know you and to work very hard with you
this year.

By the end of today:

SWBAT explain classroom expectations and procedures in order to have
a great year!

Go over agenda.

TW take attendance (orally). SW sit in seats, answer “here.” Or “aqui”

This year in Spanish 1 we have BIG GOALs because Spanish can

be a powerful tool for getting you into college, getting a job,
getting paid more, traveling, & many other things that we will
talk about this year. You are all SMART students and I know you
are capable of reaching these goals, but we have to work really
hard and waste no time in order to do it.

Start first bit of Spanish – “Cómo te llamas? “  “Me llamo __” & share 1
goal – 5 or so kids – RAISE HANDS
Those are GREAT goals – we can work towards all of those in
this class – now I want to talk to you about OUR BIG GOALS b/c
achieving this year’s class goals will help every single one of
you with your individual goals

TW present the BIG GOALs

- class average of 80% on final exam – WHY? Because 80%
indicates mastery which means that you are on your way to being
proficient in Spanish – proficient means you can carry on a
conversation & communicate with native speakers – THAT’s what
gets you jobs, into college, money

- SWBAT write a 100-word paragraph & have 1 minute conversation

in Spanish – may sound hard now, but if you come to class
everyday, participate, and do the work you will be surprised how
easy it is at the end of the year!

- etc – elaborate on big goals

CFU: What % do we want to score on final exam? Why 80%? How
many words are we going to be able to write? How long
conversation? What is our 3rd Big Goal? What is our last Big Goal?
Why important?
In order to achieve this Big Goal, we need understand the class
expectations and procedures.

In order to achieve these Big Goals, we need understand the

class expectations and procedures.

Expectations: This year, we have no time to waste. Our goals are absolutely within
reach, but it will take very hard work. In order to reach these goals, it is incredibly
important that we conduct ourselves like professionals and rise to our high
expectations. All my expectations are expectations that
professionals are held to – most/all of you have goals that
involve going on to being professionals, so this class is going to
prepare you for that. Could someone raise their hand and read
expectation #1?
Student reads – 1 voice!!!!
When I am talking, I expect it silent a) sign respect b)how you act
in college and at job c) hurts learning if don’t – yours and your
classmates
Student reads – Be professional
Add – RAISE HAND-why important-“levanta la mano”-love
participation but must respect everyone. I WILL ALWAYS RESPECT you
Student reads – Be nice
When you talk to each other in this class, I expect you to do it
kindly – there will be no jokes at another person’s expense in here
Student reads – don’t touch each other
Children hit each other and steal each other’s pencils and play
fight – you are not children – in here you are professionals

Why I teach – State of world today – not good, we need you – bright,
smart students to change things
- Ask students to name your 3 characteristics of ideal classroom
- Students write & share – I COLLECT - display

I think these are great characteristics you’ve named –

everything I do in this class is with the aim of helping you
achieve SUCCESS so you can change the world in the ways you
want to. THAT is why I have the high expectations I have for
this class and myself I have very high expectations for every
one of you and for myself and this class and if you are not living
up to them , I will let you know that so you can change it
immediately

Go over consequences briefly

Guided Practice Before we can learn what we are doing this year, we must first Markers.
enter the classroom in an orderly, smart way. Large pieces of
paper so they
PROCEDURE: ENTERING/WARM-UP can write their
walk-in quietly list.
pick-up handouts for the day,
check your mailbox,
put your homework in the upper left corner of your desk
start your warm-up silently.
There will be a timer on the board showing you how much time you have
to complete the warm-up and it will take you all of that time – you don’t have
time to be late OR search for something to write with OR visit friends once
the bell rings. When you have completed the warm-up, raise your
hand b/c you will get 5 pts each day for having it completed –
NO CREDIT for partially complete or ALMOST complete warm-
ups. We need to enter this way so we don’t waste learning time
and get right to work.

I’d like this to be done perfectly. Each day it’s done perfect the
first time, we will move forward on the “Viaje al éxito” – we will
talk more about this later, but basically it is a competition with
the other classes to see which class is being the most
successful.

TW model entering procedure – what we do, what we do not.

Volunteer student will practice entering procedure. Did this student do it

perfectly? Why/why not? (Don’t have whole class try it here, wait until
the end)

CFU: How do we enter our classroom? Why?

PROCEDURE: RAISE HAND VS. CALL OUT

- Discuss why it is important
- Ask student to read objective? And answer warm-up Qs– praise
students who raise hands, do not respond right/wrong to those that call
out – repeat importance of raising hands in this classroom

PROCEDURE: BATHROOM
Students are expected to take care of personal needs between
class periods. Each student will be given two bathroom passes
per quarter that can be used in the case of emergency. You will
be excused to use this pass during times when I am NOT talking
up front. Fill out the pass and raise your hand during
independent practice so I can sign the pass. It is your
responsibility to hold on to the pass throughout the quarter. If
you do not use your pass by the end of the quarter, you can
submit it for extra credit.

CFU: When can you go to the bathroom? Why? Can you use your
emergency pass at any time?

PROCEDURE: GARBAGE
All trash and recycling can be emptied at the end of class (as describing
in the leaving class procedure). Do not get up at any point to throw
away your trash during class, unless I have directed you to do so. We
have too much to learn this year to waste time getting out of our seats.

CFU: When can you throw away trash? Why? Can you get out of your
seat at any time?

Go over syllabus scavenger hunt & any remaining syllabus issues. Give
out pesos as we go over answers to students who raise their hands (5
mins)

PROCEDURE: How to earn PESOS

- Raise hand & answer tough questions, exemplify professional
behavior, etc

PROCEDURE: Cell phones & iPods

NO WARNINGS – school & class policy – if I I see it I take it til end of day
– if I see it again it goes to administrator – studens write down in guided
notes
CFU: Why take it so seriously?  Distracts from learning, miss important
info, & disrespectful

PROCEDURE: Grades

PROCEDURE: Making up missed work

It is YOUR responsibility to make up missed work before or after school.
Credit will ONLY be given if you bring a note to show it was an excused
absence.
1. Look up the pages of notes you missed in your stamp chart
2. Find blank guided notes in the file cabinet
3. Use class binder to fill in missed notes
4. Complete Independent Practice & homework & show Ms. Leach to get
credit

PROCEDURE: Coming Prepared

Must bring pen or pencil AND binder everyday to be prepared

CLOSING - 5-10
Minutes
Reflection on what Excited to have all of you in my class. Now we’re going to do an
was learned “Exit al éxito” – what does it mean? Exit to success. This is how
we will end class every single day – the bell does not dismiss
you, I dismiss you. If you are out of your seat before I dismiss
you
TW direct students to turn to back of the warm-up to find exit slip &
answer questions SILENTLY
- What are our big goals? What are our class expectations? Why?
As students fill out exit slip, TW narrate the good things (silently
working) she observes or things that she would like to see

Students share out their answers for pesos when they raise their hand.

PROCEDURE: EXITING
Pick up garbage
Pack up materials
Pass exit slips forward quietyl

10 minutes before class is over: Practice exiting/entering procedure.

Teacher demonstrates, one student demonstrates. Was it perfect?
Whole class practices 1 time before they actually get to leave. Reward
on “Viaje al éxito” if done correctly.

HOMEWORK Syllabus signed by student & parents (due next day) Copies of
syllabus &
letter for every
student
