Software is often divided into two categories:

1. Systems software: An Operating System (OS) program controls the


entire operation of the computer and its devices.
Examples of Operating Systems (OS) include:
Windows 1998, 2000, NT and XP and the latest Windows Vista
UNIX
Linux
MS-DOS
Apple
OS/2 Warp (IMB)
Mac OS

2. Applications software: These are programs that instruct the computer to


carry out specific tasks.
Examples of Application Software include:
Microsoft Word, Notepad, Microsoft Works Word processor
(Word-processing)
Microsoft Excel (Spreadsheets)
Microsoft Access, Oracle (Databases)
Microsoft Outlook (E-mail)
Microsoft PowerPoint (Slide Presentations)
Paint, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Publisher (Graphics)
Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Mozilla Firefox (Web/
Internet) Browsers
Windows Media Player, DivX Player, QuickTime, Sonic,
Winamp (Music and Movies)
