AIM: to improve students language skills and enlarge their vocabulary
OBJECTIVES: to introduce and practice new vocabulary items
to develop learners language skills (reading comprehension, speaking, writing)
to explain the use and importance of 3 different reading strategies (scanning,
skimming and finding the main idea of a paragraph)
TEACHING STRATEGIES: explaining, questioning, evaluating
LEARNING ACTIVITIES: reading comprehension, answering questions, guessing
TEACHING MATERIALS AND AIDS: textbook, workbook, blackboard, student teacher

2.1. Warm up: discussion
Objective: to arouse learners interest for the new topic
Procedures:
- tell the learners that todays topic is the future of the human race
- read the quote from the textbook related to the topic and ask the learners about
their opinion
- ask the learners to try to support their statements with some facts if possible
and ask them about the recent natural disaster in Japan

DEVELOPMENT
2.1. STAGE 1: Reading the text Estimated time: 10 minutes
Objective: to check learners pronunciation of new words and check their reading
comprehension
Procedures:
- ask students to open their books on page 44
- draw their attention to the quote by T.S.Eliot at the beginning of the text
- ask the learners to guess the meaning of the quote and relate it to the text, check
whether they are familiar with T.S.Eliots works
- ask students individually to read one paragraph at the time from the text
- check if there are any unknown words, write them on the blackboard and
explain their meaning
- ask learners to do the exercise number 1 in their textbooks

2.2. STAGE 2: Explaining the use of reading strategies Estimated time: 8 minutes
Objective: to make learners aware of different reading strategies
Procedures:
- ask students to read outloud the definition for each reading strategy
- ask students whether they are already familiar with some of these strategies and
to try to think of situations in which they might be used
- further explain these 3 strategies if necessary
- tell students to do exercises 4-6 in their textbooks
- check the answers orally
- ask the learners which of the reading strategies they used for each of these
exercises

2.3. STAGE 3: Further practice of the reading strategies Estimated time: 3 minutes
Objective: to reinforce the use of reading strategies
Procedures:
- ask students to do exercise 7 in their textbooks
- check the answers orally and ask the learners which reading strategy was
required in that particular exercise

Objective: to revise new vocabulary items
Procedures:
- tell students that they are going to do a short quiz
- distribute the copies to each student
- briefly explain what they need to do and give them a couple of minutes to do the
quiz
- check the answers and the results of the quiz orally

Objective: to practice the use of new vocabulary items

- tell students to open their workbooks on page 44

- check the answers orally
