Field Remedy: 1854


Subject: EPS-Steering - Clicking noises

Models: Engines: Option:

Meriva 2003... All

Complaint: Noises while actuating the steering.

Too less grease at the clutch between control unit/EPS electric motor and
Cause:
steering column.

As of January 2005 a higher quantity of grease at the clutch between control


Production:
unit/EPS electric motor and steering column is used.

Remedy:
In case of customer complaint grease the toothing at the clutch between
control unit/EPS electric motor and steering column using special grease ESP (sticky grease).

Working procedure:

1. Disconnect battery.
2. Remove steering column panelling

- see working procedure "Steering Column Panelling, Remove and Install",

3. Remove ventilation duct driver's side (Picture I, 1).

- remove expanding rivet (arrow)

4. Remove control unit/EPS electric motor (Picture II, 1).

- disengage and remove wiring harness plugs (3) from control unit
- unscrew 2x bolt (2)
- remove control unit with electric motor

5. Grease toothing of electric motor (Picture III).

- apply special grease EPS (sticky grease) thin to the electric


motor teeth (arrow)

Note:
Apply special grease EPS (sticky grease) even using a welding
wire.

6. Install control unit/EPS electric motor

- install control unit/EPS electric motor carefully


- tighten 2x bolts 9 Nm
- connect wiring harness plug of control unit and lock until the
retaining clip is heard to engage

7. Install ventilation duct driver's side.


8. Install steering column panelling

- see working procedure "Steering Column Panelling, Remove and Install",

9. Connect battery.
10. Program volatile memories.
