Manila Heritage and Urban Renewal An Analysis of Urban Revitalization Through Organic Growth and Preservation

This proposal examines urban revitalization in Manila through organic growth and heritage preservation. The students chose this topic because buildings and cities undergo changes over time and urban renewal is needed to prevent decline. For Manila specifically, iconic historical buildings and districts need restoration to bring back past glory and create vibrant tourist areas. The proposed focus areas are the Manila Central Post Office, Liwasang Bonifacio Park, and the South Harbor port zone. The research could contribute to identifying other Philippine buildings worth preserving and developing new approaches to city revitalization through highlighting cultural heritage. Related literature on organic growth, adaptive reuse, and urban renewal projects will be consulted.

TITLE PROPOSAL

NAME:Bartolome Jessie L. COURSE: Bachelor of Science in Architecture

Lucillo Joseph D.L.

PROPOSED TITLE NO. 3
TITLE: Manila Heritage and Urban Renewal: An Analysis of Urban Revitalization through Organic
Growth and Preservation

REASONS/ JUSTIFICATIONS IN CHOOSING THE TOPIC:

Buildings and structures are not a fixed object, it will not stay forever and will be subjected to
change either physically or functionally, such factors like economics, politics technology and
demography creates urban redevelopment and from time to time it will lead to change of our social
life pattern.
When a building no longer meets the social needs, usually it has to be run down, by
demolishing it we can build another facility or a structure which is more beneficial or appropriate.
However, there is an instance that a building may still serve its purpose and might still have the
capability to adapt and fit with the current environment, this is where heritage building falls, these are
the buildings worth restoring and preserving for their historical and economical value.
According to Architect Felino A Palafox, jr., Towns and cities are like humans. They undergo
several life stages that at some point they decline in terms of their function and physical growth upon
reaching maturity. Their physical form deteriorates and their social function becomes obsolete. The
tendency of inhabitants of the district is to move out and look for another location that is more
conducive to living and working and could offer or meet their needs. To prevent this, the national
government, developers, planners and architects must develop ways to revive a dying district. One
key is urban renewal.
We choose Manila as the topic as to bring back the glory days as it was in the post
colonization and colonization era, currently there is a need to preserve, restore and implement the
adaptive reuse of iconic and historically significant public architecture in Manila, preserving heritage
buildings and landmarks thus revitalizing an important historical district. It will create vibrant tourist
zones in Manila and generate stream of revenues for the Government of the Philippines. Subjected to
the urban renewal includes Manila Central Post Office Compound, Liwasang Bonifacion Park,
Metrolopolitan Theater and South Harbor Expanded Port Zone as it can be vital to be a central

commercial business district. The architectural context lies within the topic is mainly on urban
planning and programming the system of the whole development for success of urban renewal.

EXPECTED CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE GROWTH OF KNOWLEDGE IN

ARCHITECTURE:
This research could contribute to discover the heritage-value of other existing building in its
given context, as we already know that the Manila is an important city in our history we can develop
new architectural approach to apply in revitalizing other underutilized buildings around the nation,
using exploration of our heritage value as it can be a direct link to the architecture in the Philippines
and to further contribute to the revitalization of our cities and giving opportunity for our country to be
well known because of our rich history.
