Computer Lab 3 - 2017

This document provides instructions for a structural analysis lab assignment using Space Gass software to model a 3-story building, determine design forces, and analyze a frame for maximum bending moment; students are asked to update to the 2017 Space Gass version, analyze a frame shown carrying different floor uses under service and design loads, and check deflections.

Exercise 1: A three story building needs to be modelled using Space Gass to determine
design bending moments, shear forces and axial forces. The plan view of the building
is shown in Figure 1. The plan is identical for all three floors. However, the use of the
floors varies. Ground floor occupied by laboratories and heavy machinery installations.
First floor houses class rooms and second floor houses library and reading areas. Cross
section of a frame is shown in Figure 2.

Assume slab thickness at first floor and second floor level as 150 mm and self-weight
of screed and finishes as 1.5 kN/m2.

1. Determine a frame that carries the maximum load and analyze the frame shown
in figure 2 for service load and ultimate design load.
2. Identify the beam that carries maximum bending moment and plot the bending
moment diagram to the beam.
3. What is the maximum lateral deflection in the frame and vertical deflection of
beams? Check if the deflection is less than span/250 limit.
