The increasing concentration of CO2 in our atmosphere is one of the major concerns. According
to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, CO2 actually occupies .04%
of the total atmospheric volume. This small volume is still said to have affected the atmosphere
severely leading to global warming, climate changes and much more adverse effects. Many
methods have been discovered for capturing and storage of carbon directly from the atmosphere
in the form of carbon dioxide, but these methods involve treatment of high concentration of
CO2 under high pressure and extremely high temperature for the process to be efficient.
Recently, a new revolutionary process in the field is discovered, process takes CO2 and turns it
directly into methanol (its combustible cousin), which can be used in fuel cells, as a clean-
burning fuel for internal combustion engines. The process not only helps us in managing the
excessive carbon present in the air, but also solves the problem of fueling our motor vehicles.
This new system operates at low temperatures and with lower concentrations of the gas, which
is the process can be powered by renewable energy. This means that the resulting fuel is far
more sustainable from both a production standpoint and because it acts to remove carbon
emissions from the atmosphere. This review paper discusses the detailed experiments and
reactions involved in the process and compares advantages involved in the process with the
process used earlier.
