Phys of Sports Script

This script describes how to shoot the perfect three pointer using physics. It provides measurements of a basketball player shooting, including their height, distance from the hoop, and the forces applied. It then breaks down the physics step-by-step, measuring the ball's mass, diameter, momentum, speed, and acceleration as it travels through the air and into the hoop. The optimal angle for a shot is described as 45 degrees, but angles over 37 degrees can work with more or less force applied depending on the shooter's height.

Script
Have you ever wanted to shoot the perfect three pointer?
Well we are going to teach you how... With physics!

(Music + Title Slide)

(Pro shooter slide)

(Breakdown Slide + Voice overs)

The mass of the ball is 623.7 grams and the shooters height is 1.78 meters.
the shooter is 6.02 meters from the hoop and the basketball hoop is 3.05 meters high .
The circumference of the hoop is 0.91 meters and the circumference of the basketball
is 0.76.

(Foot placement slide with voice over)

Notice the width of his feet, shoulder width apart with one foot slightly forward for
increased balance during the shot.
Notice the three distinct, three-step motion his arms take when he goes to shoot.
First, he pulls his arms up with his shoulders, then he straightens his arms with his
elbows, and finally flicks his wrists to apply force to the ball.
The force applied to the ball is approximately 3.65N.
Watch how the shooter follows through with his arms, allowing the momentum from his
arms to be almost fully transferred to the ball.
The ball flies through the air with a momentum of 5,987
When the ball goes into the hoop, it has a force of about 4N.
The ball has a speed of about 3m/s as it goes into the hoop and as it falls to the ground
it has an acceleration of 9.8 meters per second.
When the ball hits the ground, it has a force of 6.237.

(Whiteboard shot with voice over)

Now we will break down the physics even further.
The basketball has a mass of .623kg and is thrown about 6.02 meters into the basket.
The basketball hoop is 3.05 meters high
The rim has a diameter of 46 centimeters, and the ball has a diameter of 28cm.
The optimal angle for the ball to be thrown at is 45 degrees, but most angles over 37
degrees will work if more or less force is applied.
The player is 1.8 meters tall, and the taller the shooter, the smaller the angle needs to
be.
The ball is thrown with a force of 3.85newtons, which is about the same as throwing
your binder across the room.
