Robotics Weekend Program Syllabi

The document outlines a two-day introduction to robotics workshop using LEGO Mindstorm EV3. Day 1 includes exercises building simple robots and programming motor movements, challenges involving distance measurement and obstacle avoidance using sensors, and races using touch sensors as controllers. Day 2 covers using color sensors to detect and make decisions based on color, as well as challenges combining functions by building grabber arms controlled by the middle motor and ultrasonic sensors. The workshop aims to teach core robotics concepts and programming skills through practical exercises and competitive games.

Introduction to robotics with LEGO Mindstorm EV3

Day 1
Section Time Activity Description

01 10:00 to 10:15 Get to know its other

02 10:15 to 10:45 General talk about robotics Discuss about robots, automations and cyborgs.
Understand the differences. Introduction to Ev3.
03 10:45 to 12:15 Exercises with motor Building a simple robot with 2 large motors for the
movements wheels. Description of the large motors and exercises
with combined movements using only the green tab from
the Mindstorm software.
04 12:15 to 12:30 Movement challenge Setting 2 lines and give 5 minutes to the kids to prepare
and find the exact distance using only their robot and
experimenting with their code. After that the teams
robot closest to the finish line wins.
BREAK
05 13:00 to 14:15 Learning the ultrasonic Adding the ultrasonic sensor to the robot and learn how
sensor with 3 activities to use it. Stop in front of obstacles, decelerate when in
danger of collision and avoid obstacles.
06 14:15 to 15:15 Learning the touch sensor Building a controller with 2 touch sensors and learn how
using it as a controller to program the robot so that it is moving according to the
state of the sensors.
07 15:15 to 15:30 Race challenge Making a slalom track and let kids make changes to the
program or the robot so that they can race using the
controller. There are penalties any time the robot gets
out of track. Fastest robot with less penalties wins.

Day 2
Section Time Activity Description

08 10:00 to 10:30 Color sensor and RGB model Learning how color sensor works, how people understand
colors, how robots understand colors and what RGB model is.
09 10:30 to 10:45 Color detector with color Making a device that says what color sees in front of it.
sensor
10 10:45 to 12:00 Making decisions depending On a track with multiple colors on the ground, we program
on the color the robot to act differently on each color.
11 12:00 to 12:30 Strength Challenge Kids get to make any modification on the robot or the
program and fight with another teams robot in a white ring
with a black border, using color sensor to stay inside the ring.
Last robot standing wins.
BREAK
12 13:00 to 13:30 Middle Motor Build a grabber with the middle motor and attach it to the
robot. Learn how to program it.
13 13:30 to 15:00 Middle motor with Combine the ultrasonic sensor to the existing robot and let
ultrasonic sensor how to program it so it can grab the things it finds.
14 15:00 to 15:25 Combined challenge Two robots from 2 teams stand across each other with a
cube in the middle. The robot that manages to grab the cube
and bring it to its side wins.
15 15:25 to 15:30 Conclusion and certificates
