Text Set

This text set contains resources for teaching students the Pythagorean theorem, including posters, websites, activities, and games. Several resources provide visual examples and explanations of the theorem. An activity asks students to create their own word problems and use 3D models to prove the Pythagorean theorem in real-life situations. An online game poses word problems of increasing difficulty for students to solve using the Pythagorean theorem. The resources aim to help students understand, verify, and apply the theorem.

8th GRADE STANDARD
8.10: The student will
verify the Pythagorean Theorem; and
apply the Pythagorean Theorem
This standard is a good standard to choose for a text set because there
are a million text that can be use to teach it. The Pythagorean Theorem is
something that students will use in real, everyday life. The Pythagorean
Theorem is a theorem that was derived a long time ago, so there is a lot
of text that you can give students to teach them how it came to be and
how it is still used today. In all of these texts they require students to be
able to verify that they are going to use the Pythagorean Theorem and
be able to apply it to the question asked.
I picked this standard because it was something I found interesting.
Finding text sets are difficult as it is for any math, but I knew that this had
some background history and would hopefully have some text to help
students verify and apply it.
Items in this text set are in alphabetical order by titles of slides.
READABILITY SCORES
Flesch-Kincaid Score: They determine the
readability they use the average sentence length
(ASL) and the average number of syllables per
word( ASW).
FKRA = (0.39 x ASL) + (11.8 x ASW) 15.59
Automated Readability Index Score: This is
determined using the word difficulty (number of
letters per word) and sentence difficulty (number
of words per sentence).
ARI = 4.71(Characters/Words) + 0.5(Words/Sentences) 21.43
CLASS ACTIVITY
This class activity or class project, gives
students a chance to have some hands on
experience with Pythagorean Theorem.
The objective of it is to have students to
be able to make their own real life word
problem and use a 3D model to prove it.
This is a week long project that students
will work in class and in groups to
complete. This will allow them to learn to
visualize the Pythagorean Theorem in a
real life situation that they make.

HISTORY WEBSITE
This website gives students some
background knowledge of how the
Pythagorean Theorem came about. It
gives us background information
about Pythagoras and how he came
to this theorems conclusion. At the
bottom of the website it gives more
website URLs that can further your
information about the Pythagorean
Theorem. This website will help verify
what the Pythagorean Theorem is and
its origin.

POSTER This is a poster is a way for students
to visualize what Pythagorean
Theorem is. It gives the definition and
a corresponding example to show
how the theorem is applied. The
example will allow them to identify
what this theorem is. The example is
followed with a photo or diagram
that explains what the example
equation is saying, but uses a
diagram.
Readability: There is no readability
because there are less then 100
words. 100 plus words are needed to
find readability in a text.

POSTER
This poster reinforces what Pythagoras
wanted the world to know. At the top of
the poster it gives the theorem and an
example that clearly shows how this
theorem works. The part of this poster
that differs itself from the other one, is
that bottom of the poster. It shows how
the theorems equation can be
interchangeable.
Readability: There is less then 100 words
on this poster, so you cannot determine
readability.

PYTHAGOREAN MAZE This is an activity that has students
work to find their way from start to
finish. To complete this they must use
what they know and have learned about
Pythagorean Theorem. At the start it
gives them a right angled triangle and
has them solve for a side (x). Once you
solve for x, you move the direction of
that answer and continue until you get
to the finish. This will allow them to see
how the equation/theorem can be
interchangeable depending on what
you have ad dont have.
Readability: This can not be determined
because there are less then 100 words
on the page.

PYTHAGOREAN WEBSITE
This website gives a multitude of things
for a student to further understand the
Pythagorean Theorem. You can listen to a
lesson that will talk you through how the
theorem is used. It also has the words
being spoken so you can read along. It
has questions that they can work through
to practice. It have real experience
problems they can use. It also gives you
some challenging questions to try. This
allows students to apply the theorem and
understand what it looks like.

RAGS TO RICHES GAME
This is an online game that will give word
problems to solve. These word problems all
have to do with the Pythagorean Theorem. The
questions get harder as you go up in money. It
is like jeopardy but with math and you dont
receive actual money. It will allow them to
learn how to apply the theorem in different
ways, and be able to visualize it.

WORKSHEET TO EXPLAIN
This worksheet gives the students
a little background knowledge to
how this theorem works. The
worksheet explains the theorem
in-depth by using a photo to refer
to. Some kids need proof of
something to know that it works or
is a real thing. This worksheet gives
proof to how this theorem come to
be and how it works. It will allow
them to visualize the Pythagorean
Theorem.

WORKSHEET TO TRY IT
The worksheet starts with some find
the missing side problems that students
can work on. it also gives them a triangle
to look at you be able to visualize it.
Then it gives them length of the sides
that they must use to find the missing
side. It does not show a triangle so it
challenges them to visualize it
themselves. The last part gives them
words problems that they must read and
infer to solve. This gives them a chance
to see how this theorem can be used in
real life situations.

This video begins by explaining the
basics of the Pythagorean
Theorem. Starts with explaining
how it must be a right triangle, then
explains the names of all the sides,
and lastly explains how you use it.
This video talks at a slow and easily
understood pace that will allow kids
to really grasp the information.
