TPMS
The Basics

(Tire Pressure Monitoring System)

A tire pressure monitoring system, or TPMS, is a warning system that alerts a driver of a 25% decrease in air pressure in one or more of a vehicles tires. Pressure and temperature sensing transmitters are mounted inside each tire and individually communicate with the vehicles computer (ECU) for display on the dashboard via radio frequency (RF) waves. The display warning appears as one of the following:

The TREAD Act

The TREAD (Transportation Recall Enhancement, Accountability and Documentation) Act passed as a November 1, 2000 response by NHTSA (National Highway Trafc Safety Administration) to defective Firestone tires on Ford Explorer SUVs. The act serves to improve driver safety and awareness while on the road. Specically, the act requires all vehicles produced after September 1, 2007 to have a TPMS (amongst other requirements). New cars MUST have:

TPMS Benets
Safer Driving
Properly inated tires improve vehicle handling, steering and braking distance. These properly inated tires grip the road better in all conditions (including rain and snow) and shorten stopping distances.

Improve Fuel Economy

Underinated tires can increase fuel consumption as much as 10%. With the average driver consuming 660 gallons of gasoline per year, nearly $200 can be saved annually per driver (at $3/gal). At this rate, 2.8 billion gallons in the United States alone are wasted each year due to underinated tires - $8.4 billion!

Lengthen Tire Tread Life

Underinated tires reduce tire tread life by 15% and increase the frequency of needing to change tires. 3 out of 4 roadside ats are a result of a slow tire leak and can be prevented with a TPMS.

Decrease Stopping Distance

In tests run by Goodyear, stopping distances while traveling 45 mph decrease by 20 feet on a wet surface when varying proper tire pressure to an underinated level. While traveling 45 mph on a dry surface, stopping distances were shortened by 8 feet. With proper pressure, a number of crashes can be completely avoided and those that actually occur will collide at a lower impact speed.

Tire Pressure Facts

660 fatalities and 33,000 injuries per year are attributable to crashes caused by underination One in four cars and one in three light trucks have at least one signicantly underinated tire Equipping all passenger vehicles with TPMS will prevent an estimated 8,500 crashes annually Tire pressure monitoring systems are now required by the TREAD act on all new vehicles For each gallon of gasoline consumed, 20.8 lbs of CO2 are released into the atmosphere Properly inated tires can save an individual as much as $430 per year on gasoline Approximately 75% of roadside ats are preceded by a slow leak or underination Equipping all vehicles with a TPMS will save an estimated 120 lives annually Nearly 250,000 accidents per year are attributable to underination 9% of tires on the road are bald, according to the NHTSA 55% of vehicles have at least one underinated tire

TPMS Q&A :

Customer & Mechanic

How do I know if my vehicle is equipped with TPMS?

The easiest ways to determine if your vehicle is equipped with a TPMS include checking the dashboard indicator lights at startup or referencing the owners manual. Passenger vehicles and light trucks manufactured after September 1, 2007 are required by the TREAD Act to have TPMS. Auto manufacturers began phasing TPMS into vehicles prior to 2007.

What does it mean when my warning light turns on?

If you are driving and notice the TPMS warning symbol, one or more of your tires is most likely 10-25% underinated. Find a safe place to pull over and examine or ll up your tires. If the TPMS warning light comes on and ashes on for one second and off for three seconds, this indicates a malfunction with the vehicle's TPMS system.

How do I know the proper tire pressure for my vehicle?

The recommended tire pressure can be found on your vehicles placard, typically located on the inside of the drivers side door or on the door itself or in the owners manual.
!

If my TPMS light is on and I fill my tires with air, will it turn off by itself?
Yes, the TPMS sensors in your tires will recognize the increase in pressure and the warning light will turn off once the pressure is in accordance with the placard pressure. Depending on the vehicle, some TPMS sensors will require driving a short distance before the light turns off. Remember to check all four tires for proper pressure.

Why does my tire pressure change?

!

Tire pressure (psi) is inuenced by many factors including frequency of use, temperature and damage to the tire itself. Tires will naturally lose 1-2 psi per month due to regular wear and tear. As a rule of thumb, for every 10F drop in ambient temperature, tire pressure drops around 1 psi.

The

Difference
Radio Frequency (RF) Patents
Orange sensors are certied in the US, Canada, Europe and various Asian countries. Continuous monitoring of tire pressure and temperature is seamlessly relayed every 30 seconds to the on-dash receiver through wireless RF technology.

Military Grade Lithium Battery

The 3.6V Military grade C lithium battery used in all Orange sensors combined with our patented battery management system ensures maximum battery life and sensor performance. Lasting 7 years under nominal conditions, Orange batteries can last an average of up to 2 more years than OE counterparts.

Sensor Patents
The heart of the whole system, Orange sensors are patented to detect pressure and temperature data every 3 seconds and transmit tire data immediately if there is a rapid decrease in pressure. Under normal conditions, data is transmitted every 30 seconds, 24 hours a day. Original equipment sensors do not transmit data as often as Orange sensors. Faster readings lead to increased driving safety.

2 piece design!
if a valve is damaged, need only replace valve - not the entire sensor 5- 26 Adjustable Stem
Not only replaceable, the sensor stem is able to be angled anywhere between 5 and 26 degrees. This feature enables the Orange sensor to work with a variety of tires without having to purchase a new sensor. The sensor is able to t snuggly on the wheel well to ensure optimal installation performance. Ideal for customers with snow tires, there is no need to have a different set of sensors for each set of tires.

Aircraft Grade Aluminum Stem

The majority of OE valves are made of inferior die cast or rubber materials while the Orange sensor uses a high quality 6061 aircraft grade aluminum stem with a stainless steel core. Having a solid construction, the Orange stem is less likely to corrode, chip or simply malfunction. Less replacements leads to lower costs for all involved.

T30 Tool
Smart, Time Saving Scanning Tool
The T30 tool reads and displays OE sensor functionality, tire pressure, percentage of battery life and ID number. This low cost tool is designed to reduce the amount of time needed to diagnose tire pressure problems.

Scan | Trigger | Clone ID

Program the sensor,

not the vehicle!

Diagnose, Diagnose, Diagnose

By scanning OE sensor information from inside the tire, mechanics can diagnose which tires have low-pressure and dead or broken sensors without even touching a sensor. Easily show customers the results and drive sales.

One-Touch ID Writability
The T30 utilizes a patent pending wireless technology to capture the OE sensor ID number and re-write that OE identication number onto the new Orange TPMS sensor at the push of a button. This procedure clones the ID number of the OE sensor so the vehicles ECU recognizes the new Orange TPMS sensor as the old OE sensor. The system is designed to bypass auto re-learn procedures.

TPMS Rebuild Kits

OE TPMS manufacturers recommend that each time a tire is removed from a vehicle, the sealing components of the OE TPMS sensor be replaced. These sealing components include the valve cap & core, the retaining nut, and both the rubber and metal washers. Rebuild kit contents will vary based on the construction of the specic OE sensor. The fact that sensors are supposed to be serviced translates into an additional prot driver for shops and distributors alike while better serving customers
