Music Department
The school year 1952- '53 has been a busy one for the music department.
The first major performance by the Girls' Glee Club was at the Teachers
Two students from our orchestra, Edna Cassidy and Keith McGowan
p lay ed for the Missouri State Teachers Meeting in Kansas City in November.
Ninety students from all of our musical organizations took part in our
This school year, the Buffalo Orchestra and Band both received "Ex-
cellent" ratings at the Sub-District Music Contest in Lebanon and at the District
Music Contes t in Columbia on May 2. Our clarinet quartet also qualified for

Athletics
Another very fine year in athletics for Buffalo High School closed on May 15,
1953. Many exciting, thrilling moments passed; many victories were won; many
fine gestures of respect and sportsmanship were demonstrated, a.nd many trophies
were received. Many of those anxious moments will be relived for a long time to
come.
The greatest achievement during the year was accomplished by the Bison varsity
basketball team which qualified for the State Class B Tournament at Cape Girardeau.
Only sixteen teams in the state qualified for the meet. The Bisons were eliminated
in their first game by the Savannah High team by a score of 58 to 50.
The best record made by any single team was compiled by the girls' softball
teatn which played ~n undefeated schedule, winning twelve consecutive games. Their
season was climaxed by winning the Buffalo Girls' Invitational Tournament.
Also the varsity basketball team won the Buffalo Invitational Tournament,
placed second in the Sub-regional tournament, and second in the regional. The Bisons
ended in a two-way tie with Senior High of Springfield for the Skyline Conference
Championship in its first year of operation. The Bisons ended the season with a
27 won 9 lost record. Deryl Bradley, Charles Crosby, and EdwardDeckwere voted
on the All-Conference squad. Deryl Bradley was voted on the second All-State team
by sports writers and referees throughout the state.
The Bisonnettes volleyball team played a winning schedule, and also won second
places in the Crocker and Conway Invitational tournaments.
The Bison Junior High basketballers won 10 games and lost 7. They won 3rd
in Camdenton Invitational, and 3rd in the Buffalo Invitational tournament.
The only losing schedule was played by the Bison softballers which won 4 while
losing 6 games.
The track program is ·growing steadily. Several meets were entered. The
season was climaxed . on May 16, when the 7th, 8th, 9th, and prevue track teams
traveled to the S. M. S. oval in Springfield for an all day affair with Greenwood.
Boys who lettered this year of 1953 in track were as follows: Charles Clark,
Robert Nelson, Harold Stanton, Charley Pierce, Deryl Bradley, Jimmie Moore,
Dick Foster, Dale Vest, Louis Maddux, Warren K. Vest, Norman Nixon, Bill Sharp,
Tom McKee, and Donald Pinkley.
Regardless of what the more biased person might say or think, success or
failure in any type of athletics participation cannot be measured in teams of winning
or losing contests. The many intangible qualities tha: c.thletes must absorb far out-
weigh the winning motive. Let us mention respect for opponents, authority, co-
operation, teamwork, fair play, determination, friendship, acquisition of good health
habits, and how to be a modest winner and a gracious loser. It is hoped those quali-
ties were acquired by athletes of 1952- '53 and will be acquired by all the Bison
athletes that follow in the years to come.
