Bill Gibbs Documentary Voice Over Script
Since the beginning of time, people have looked up at the night sky, seeing the vast
world of the unknown. They saw the planets and the stars, the sun and the moon, and
they wondered what else there could possibly be. How much is there to explore? Are
there any benefits to what could be out there? Is there anyone out there? Astronomers
pondered these questions for centuries, hoping that one day, man would leave this
earth and explore the unknown of space….
In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower established The National Aeronautics and
Space Administration, commonly known as NASA, as an independent agency of the
executive branch of the United States federal government, responsible for the civilian
space program and aeronautics and aerospace research. The National Aeronautics and
Space Act was passed on July 29, 1958, and NASA was officially born. Since that time,
the large majority of U.S. space exploration efforts have been led by NASA, of them
including the Apollo Moon landing missions, the Skylab space station, the creation of
the Space Shuttle, and the International Space Station.
In 2003, NASA HUNCH was officially created. HUNCH stands for High schools United
with NASA to Create Hardware. Their goal is to bring high schools and high school
students new educational experiences by being involved in NASA projects. The
program originally started with just a handful of schools producing hardware and training
items for the International Space Station, and it has now grown to over 150 schools
across the country who are actively creating hardware and soft-goods for flight and
training, designing prototypes and entrees for astronauts on the International Space
Station, and producing videos about NASA’s mission and the experiments aboard the
International Space Station. Over 20,000 students have participated, and about 94
percent of them moved on to pursue undergraduate degrees. Back in 2003, founder
Stacy Hale called on Mr. William Gibbs, a Machine and Metal Shop Instructor at Clear
Creek High School in League City, Texas, located within Houston, Texas, to help him
get the wheels spinning on the NASA Hunch project. In September of 2017, I sat down
with Mr. Gibbs, one of the first NASA Hunch instructors, and we talked about the
creation and advancement of the program, his involvement in the program, the impact
of the program on Hunch students, and impact of the program on him….
