2018-2019 BUDGET FACT SHEET
Significant Budget Changes
Increase Secondary Tuition (+$328k)
Tuition costs in grades 7-12 are rising
significantly. This is because student
enrollment has gone up with 10.2

increase reflects rising tuition rates in our
region ($170k).
Eliminate Elementary Teacher (-$85.1k)
Elementary staffing will be cut through

Current F.E.S. Successes from the FWSU Action Plan
PROFICIENCY-BASED PERSONALIZED LEARNING
Mathematics: Between fall and winter this year, kindergarten students’ math scores increased by 39 percent as measured by
the Vermont Primary Number and Operations Assessment (PNOA).
Literacy: In January, all kindergarten students met or exceeded the benchmark for reading fluency and reading comprehension
as measured by the Fountas and Pinnell Early Literacy Assessment (F&P).
Social-Emotional: We have implemented a cutting-edge universal social-emotional screening tool and are using data gathered
to provide targeted instruction of social skills.
LEADERSHIP
In addition to offering traditional parent-teacher conferences, students in grades 4-6 are facilitating student-led conferences
during which they reflect on their progress and set goals.
FLEXIBLE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS
Fifth grade students worked with Starbase Vermont to learn STEM concepts during a five-day residency on the Vermont Air
National Guard base in Colchester.
ENGAGED COMMUNITY PARTNERS
Family and community volunteers make programs and opportunities like Winter Wellness, the Four Winds Nature Program,
our Outdoor Classroom (under construction) and a variety of enrichment opportunities possible.

In December 2017, the Tax Commissioner Lamoille 15,000

2018 to supplement the education fund. This decision
will result in property tax increasing by 9.4 cents. MMMU 13,766
Preliminary statewide school budget increases, which
were projected to rise significantly, are now reporting South Burlington 14,636
a much lower statewide increase than we anticipated Private/ State Average 15,618
in December. This potential decrease may reduce the
anticipated state tax impact from 9.4 cents to a 2.82 Essex Tech 16,900
