Parent Teacher Conferences
I am truly looking forward to meeting with all the 4th
grade parents at our upcoming conferences. Thank you,
families, for taking the time out of your busy schedules
to come in to meet with me. It will be such a pleasure to meet with

The 2017-18 REPORT CARD!
C.E.S. students will be getting report cards this Friday, November 17th. Our report card is Common Core
aligned and meets Vermont’s Proficiency Based Graduation Requirements and Transferable Skills
Initiative. To cater to a younger audience, the transferable skills will be taught and assessed through the
16 Habits of Mind. (A Habits of Mind Poster was handed out at the beginning of the school year.)
The new report card is evidence-based and data driven. Assessments and projects are intentionally
focused on and around these learning targets. Students’ scores (grades) are based on their current
progress toward a specific learning target within a trimester. In standards-based reporting, the research
states that teachers should separate students’ academic achievement (learning targets) from b ehavior
(transferable skills). This will paint a more accurate picture of where students are in the learning
continuum at the end of a trimester.
If a student is proficient in a standard for this point in the year, they will receive a “3” on their report
card. For example, a student answered the questions, addressing that particular standard, on a math
assessment correctly. Earning a score of a “3”, means the student is right on track and working at
grade level.
A level 4, or “Expanding” is about application to new learning and puts emphasis on student initiative.
A student receiving this grade is working at a higher level of understanding and has extended their
thinking and applied it to new learning opportunities. As you can see, receiving a “4” is difficult to achieve
and is seldom used.
Examples of what a “4” might look like:
● took the initiative to create a formula that has not yet been taught for a math problem
● solves a math problem in multiple ways
● applies above grade level writing skills ex: the student uses commas to set off introductory parts
of a sentence.
● Reads and applies reading strategies at a much higher reading level
In summary, receiving a score of a “2” or “3” is wonderful and receiving a “4” will be rare!
