Graphs Notes

This document discusses proportional relationships and how to find the constant of proportionality and unit rate from graphs of proportional relationships. It provides examples of finding the constant of proportionality by picking a point on a graph line and dividing the y value by the x value. It also explains that the unit rate is represented by the point on the graph where the x-value is 1. Practice problems are included for finding the constant of proportionality, equation, and unit rate from graphs.

Notes
Graphs of Proportional Relationships
A graph shows a proportional relationship if:
1.  It is a straight line

ß Proportional

2.  It goes through the origin (0,0)

ß Proportional
Which of the following are proportional
relationships?

Proportional !
Finding the Constant of Proportionality from Graphs
If you are given a graph of a relationship, you can
determine the Constant of Proportionality (k) by picking
any point on the line, and dividing its y value by its x value.

k = y/x
k = 24/2 y = 12x
k = 12
Practice
Find the constant of proportionality (k) and the equation
for the graph below:

k = y/x
k = 96/6

k = 16

y = 16x
Practice
Find the constant of proportionality (k) and the equation
for the graph below:

k = y/x
k = 2/3

k = 0.67

y = 0.67x
Practice
Find the constant of proportionality (k) and the equation
for the graph below:

k = y/x
k = 15/10

k = 1.5

y = 1.5x
Finding Unit Rate from Graphs
The Unit Rate is represented by the point on the graph
where the x-value is 1.

(1,6)
Represents
the unit rate

The unit rate

is 6 dollars per
pound
Practice
Find the point that represents the Unit Rate:

Unit Rate: (1, 5)

5 books sold per minute
Practice
Find the point that represents the Unit Rate:

Unit Rate: (1, 0.5)

0.5 cups of sugar per jam jar
Practice
What point on the graph represents the Unit Rate?

The Unit Rate is represented by point (1, 200)
