Assignment No 6 (Vectors)

1. Form the sum a + b and difference a − b of the vectors:

(a) a = 3i + 3 j + 2k b = i + j + 2k
(b) a = − i + 2 j − 2k b = i − j + 2k
(c) a = 3i + j + 2k b = i + 3 j + 2k

2. State which of the following pairs of vectors a and b are parallel and which are
anti-parallel
(a) a = i − 3 j + k b = −4 i + 12 j − 4k
(b) a = − 2i + 3 j − k b = 2i − 3j + k
(c) a = 4i − j − 3k b = 3 i + 2 j + 3k

3. Express the following vectors a as the product of a scalar and a unit vector
(a) a = 2 i − 3 j + k (b) a = − 2i + 3 j − k (c) a = 4i − j − 3k

4. Find the vectors A, B and their direction cosines given that A and B have position
vectors a and b, respectively, where
(a) a = i − 3 j + 2k b = − i + j − 4k
(b) a = − 2i + 3 j − k b = 2i − j + k
(c) a = 4i − j + k b = 3 i + 2 j + 3k

5. Find the scalar products a ⋅ b and hence find the angle between the vectors a and b
given that
(a) a = i − 3 j + k b = −4 i + 12 j − 4k
(b) a = − 2i + 3 j − k b = 2i − 3j + k
(c) a = 4i − j − 3k b = 3 i + 2 j + 3k

6. Find unit vectors parallel to the vectors a where

(a) a = i − 3 j + k (b) a = − 2i + 3 j − k (c) a = 4i − j − 3k

(a) a = − 2i + 3 j − k b = 2i − 3j + k
(b) a =−i + j+ k b = 2i + 4 j + 3k
(c) a =−i − j+ k b = 2i + 2 j + 2k

(b) a = i − 3 j + k b = −4 i + 12 j − 4k and c = 2i + 2 j + 2k

9. Prove that if a, b, and c form three edges of a parallelepiped all meeting at a common
point, then the volume of this solid figure is given by |a . (b x c)|. Deduce that the
vanishing of the triple scalar product implies that the vectors a, b, and c are co-planar
(that is, all lie in a common plane).
