Course Description
This course covers the Mechanical Design Process, Design for Strength and Design of Mechanical
Elements. It includes design phases and failure theories for both static and fatigue conditions.
Design procedures for designing machine elements such as mechanical joints, power
transmission, belt and chain, and bearing are provided. One integrated design project or mini
project from conceptual design to Blue Print/Production drawing is also included.

1.3 Concept development, evaluation and selection
Detailed Syllabus
Learning Outcomes
1. Design Process: A Team Approach; Team interactions and organizational behavior; and
Creative Methods. (CDIO 4.5)
1.1. Setup organization structure to execute the project. (CDIO 3.1)
1.2. Create the job description for each team member.
1.3. Review and select the suitable project based on the complexity, availability of
material, machine and time frame. (CDIO 4.4.3)
1.4. Produce assembly and shop drawing ready for fabrication and assembly the product
or system. (CDIO 1.0)

defect. (CDIO 2.2)
1.6. Conduct product or system testing to observe the functionality and performance.
(CDIO 2.2)
1.7. Produce assembly and shop drawing ready for fabrication and assembly the product
or system (CDIO 1.0)
Lecture
Lectures are given to cover the basic concepts and fundamental principles of related topics.
Reading and reference materials for standard codes and practices as well as relevant worked
examples will be provided. Students are expected to have a self-study about 3 – 5 hours per
week.
Practical
Students in a team of three to five members will engage in an integrated design project with a
specific project title / case study. The development of the design will be from a conceptual
form to a practical blue print/production drawing together with appropriate calculation and
analysis. Along the process, students need to produce a final report, and minute of meeting.
The progress and final presentation also will be a part of assessment.
