Assignment # 3: BSME 15-19 Submission Before: 1500 Hrs. May 16, 2018 Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, D-219, D-Block

This document outlines 4 assignments related to heat transfer calculations for an analytical chemistry laboratory course. The assignments include: 1) Calculating the log mean temperature difference (LMTD) for parallel and counter-flow heat exchangers with given inlet/outlet temperatures and commenting on the results. 2) Determining the caloric temperature range for heat transfer between two fluids in a heat exchanger based on their API gravities and inlet/outlet temperatures. 3) Calculating the inner tube wall temperature and overall heat transfer coefficient for a counter-flow concentric tube heat exchanger given inlet temperatures, outlet temperature for the hot fluid, and flow rates. 4) Completing an exercise from a heat transfer textbook

ASSIGNMENT # 3

BSME 15-19
Submission Before: 1500 hrs. May 16, 2018
Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, D-219, D-Block
1. Calculate the LMTD for the parallel-flow and counter-flow in the following cases in which the
hot fluid is cooled from 200 to 100℉ and the cold fluid is heated through an equal range in
each case. (a) 90 to 140℉, (b) 80 to 13℉ and (c) 60 to 110℉. Comment about the nature of
deviation of LMTD from the arithmetic mean of two terminal differences in each case. Also
comment about the magnitude of LMTD in both parallel and counter flow cases and select the
batter one with justification.
2. A 40° API kerosene is cooled from 400 to 200℉ by heating 34° API crude oil from 100 to
200℉. Between what caloric temperatures is the heat transferred, and how do these deviate
from mean.
3. A counter-flow concentric tube heat exchanger is used to cool the heated process water. The
flow rate of cooling water through the inner tube is (Di = 25 mm, wall thickness = 3 mm) is
0.2kg/sec, while the flow rate of process water through outer annulus (Do = 45 mm, wall
thickness = 3 mm) is 0.1kg/sec. The hot and cold fluid enter at temperatures 80 and 30℃
respectively. Calculate the wall temperature of inner tube and overall heat transfer coefficient
if the exit temperature of hot fluid is 60℃.

4. Complete Exercise of Chapter # 6 from “Process Heat Transfer” by D. Q. Kern
