SG 2

The document describes the major equations and mechanism of a magnesium-copper cell. The overall equation shows that magnesium and hydrogen ions react to produce magnesium ions, electrons, and hydrogen gas. At the magnesium electrode, magnesium atoms ionize and release electrons. These electrons flow through the wire to the copper electrode, where they are accepted by hydrogen ions to form hydrogen gas. The movement of electrons completes the circuit and produces electricity.

Major Equations

At Magnesium Electrode : Mg Mg2+ + 2e-

At Copper Electrode : 2H + 2e- H2
Overall Equation :Mg + 2H Mg2+ + H2

Mechanism
Valance electrons from magnesium atoms in magnesium electrode flow to
copper electrode via wire since the magnesium atoms is ionised. At copper
electrode, the electrons was accepted by hydrogen ions that present in the
sulphuric acid solution to become hydrogen gas. The movement of electrons
from magnesium electrode to copper electrode will complete the circuit and
produces electricity. The generated electricity is used to power the engine.
