Problem No. 2-2 (Compression)

This document presents a problem to determine the diameter of a piston rod made of AISI 3140 steel subjected to repeated reversed loading. The maximum air pressure is 875 kPa and the piston diameter is 508 mm. The rod diameter is calculated using both the ultimate strength and yield strength of the material. Based on the ultimate strength of 153000 psi and a design factor of 8, the diameter is determined to be 42 mm. Based on the yield strength of 134000 psi and a design factor of 4, the diameter is determined to be 32 mm. Design factors for various materials and load conditions are also presented in a table.

PROBLEM NO.

2-2 ( COMPRESSION)

A piston rod made of AISI 3140 OQT 1000oF is subjected to a repeated reversed load. The load is for 508
mm diameter, air compressor with a maximum pressure of 875 KPa. Determine the diameter of the rod
using the design factor based on: a.) ultimate strength b.) yield strength

GIVEN:

𝑆𝑈 = 153000 𝑝𝑠𝑖

𝑆𝑦 = 134000𝑝𝑠𝑖

𝑁𝑈 = 8

𝑁𝑦 = 4

𝑃 = 875𝑘𝑃𝑎

∅ = 508𝑚𝑚

MATERIAL SPECIFICATION:

AISI 3140 OQT, 1000oF

REQUIRED:

Rod diameter based on

a.) Ultimate strength

b.) Yield strength

SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM:
SOLUTION:

Finding first the force acting on the piston – rod assembly

𝑁 𝜋
𝐹 = 𝑃𝐴 = (0.875 ) ( ) (508𝑚𝑚)2
𝑚𝑚2 4

𝐹 = 177.3476177𝑁

a.) Using the data from Ultimate strength ;

𝑁𝑢 𝐴 𝜋𝐷 2 𝜋𝑆𝑈

(4)(177,347.61177𝑁)(8)
𝐷 = √[ ]
0.101325𝑁
𝜋(153000𝑝𝑠𝑖) ( )
14.7𝑝𝑠𝑖𝑚𝑚2
𝐷 = 41.3905𝑚𝑚 ≈ 42𝑚𝑚
b.) Using the data from yield strength ;

4𝐹𝑁𝑦 (4)(177,347.6117𝑁)(8)
𝐷=√ = √[ ]
𝜋𝑆𝑦 0.101325𝑁
(2𝜋)(134000𝑝𝑠𝑖) ( )
14.7𝑝𝑠𝑖𝑚𝑚2
𝐷 = 31.2737𝑚𝑚 ≈ 32𝑚𝑚
