Driving Set Calculation for Piles

This document summarizes the determination of the driving set for a 200 mm by 200 mm square reinforced concrete pile using the Kreuger formula, which is a modification of the Hiley formula. Based on parameters like the hammer weight of 3 tonnes, drop height of 400 mm, pile length of 12 m, working load of 43 tonnes, and an efficiency of 0.85, the calculated set was 33.9 mm per 10 blows. The recommended driving set is 25 mm or 1 inch per 10 blows.

DETERMINATION OF DRIVING SET FOR 200 MM X 200 MM SQ. R. C.

PILE
BY DYNAMIC ANALYSIS

PROJECT : CONSTRUCTION OF 'PENCAWANG PEMBAHAGIAN UTAMA' (PPU) SUB-STATION AT KLIA

SEPANG

FORMULA USED : KREUGER FORMULA

(MODIFICATION OF HILEY FORMULA)

F-S. X R = E W H X W + P/4
S + C/2 W+P

1. - Type of hammer used : Hydraulic hammer

2. - Weight of hammer, W 3 Tonnes -

3. - Drop of hammer, H 400 mm

4. - Length of pile , L ; 12 m

5. - Weight of pile , P 0.096 t/m x 12 m 1.2 Tonnes

6. - Working load of pile , R 43 Tonnes

7. - Safety factors , F.S. 2

8. - Assuming temporary compression , C: 12

9. - Final set blow , S

10.- Efficiency of hammer, E 0.85

COMPUTATION :•
EWH
F.S. x R = 11.860

W+P/4
W+P = 0.792

To find S : S+C/2 = EWH x W+P/4

F.S. x R W+P

S SB 9.39 . - 6
= 3.39 mm Per blow
< = 33.9 mm Per 10 blow

* Recommended driving set is 25_ mm per 10 blows,

or one inch per 10 blows.

Note: The set calculation is only a guide and should be ascertained on site by load testing the pile.
