LORDSWOOD v SHEPPEY UNITED
SCEFL PREMIER DIVISION
7.45pm KO
EDITORS NOTES
Good evening everyone and welcome to Martyn Grove for this Southern Counties East
Football League game against Sheppey United.

And of course we bid a warm welcome to the players, officials and the supporters of
Sheppey United. We wish you an enjoyable stay here with us and a safe onward journey
after the game.

So here we are once again, the start of another season. The start of our 50th year and a
year that holds much promise for the future of the club. Our partnership with Charlton
Athletic Community Trust in setting up an Academy here at Martyn Grove. A friendly at
the end of this month where a Charlton Athletic XI will visit us as part of our 50th
celebrations. A new chairman on board with a vision and drive to develop the club and
ground. A whole host of new sponsors who have brought much needed income to the club.

On the subject of our new chairman, Terry Hussey, I’d like top officially welcome him to
the club. Additionally we have a number of new faces on the committee and so I’d like to
also welcome Stuart Baker, Mark Young, John Goodwin and James Kennedy to the club.
All bring their own expertise and specialities to the board and we look forward to driving
the club forwards together. On the subject of welcomes, I’d also like to welcome the new
players that have joined to the club and we hope that you have a long and successful career
with us here at Martyn Grove.

Our season kicked off with a difficult game at Croydon which we won 2-1. Pitch was
awful, officials weren’t great, and the heat was energy sapping but the boys dug deep to
take home the 3 points and ultimately that is what is most important. Tonight’s game will
be a much stronger test and whilst we welcome a couple of players back that were missing
on Saturday, we are still quite a way short of having a full strength squad.

As always the club relies on your support and sponsorship to help us get by from one
season to the next. There are numerous sponsorship opportunities available. If you feel
you could assist through one of our sponsorship deals or by donating some of your free
time to assist with the running of the club then we’d love to hear from you. Please speak
to a member of the committee for further details.

Get behind the boys tonight. Enjoy the game and let’s hope for an Orange and Black win!

NO BATTLE, NO VICTORY!!

OUR OPPONENTS
Sheppey United
Sheppey United FC was formed in 1890 by a merger of Sheerness Victoria and Invicta, and initially played
at the Sheppey United Cricket Club ground at Botany Road. The first match was at Sittingbourne on 20
September 1890, with Sheppey running out 3-1 winners despite turning up with only ten players. The
match report referred to us as ‘the Sheppeyites’, hence the club nickname ‘The Ites’, which remains to this
day

Sheppey United sold the much-loved Botany Round ground to developers in 1992 to clear a massive
overdraft, and this started a long and slow death for the club.

Initially this did not appear to present too many problems as Sheppey romped away with the Kent League
title, whilst ground-sharing with Faversham Town, losing only two out of forty games. Ultimately
however, as the club spent most of the 1990s trying in vain to find a new home on the Island, years of
playing away from Sheppey began to take its toll, as the club moved from Faversham, to Canterbury, and
then to Sittingbourne. Attendances fell sharply as supporters increasingly became disenchanted with
traveling off the Island for ‘home’ games, and the club could no longer afford the rents involved.

In March 2001 the club resigned from the Kent League and their record was expunged. The senior team
was disbanded until being reformed in 2003, when they joined Division Two East of the Kent County
League. They finished second in their first season and were promoted to Division One East. The club was
renamed AFC Sheppey in 2007, but was disbanded and reformed under their original name prior to the
2010–11 season.
In June 2013 the club merged with Sheerness East FC to become Sheppey & Sheerness United FC
competing in the Kent County League Premier Division with the club playing their home games a Holm
Park formerly Canning Town Gasworks and then Sheerness Steel Sports Ground. The season saw the club
win the Kent FA Intermediate Challenge Shield and finish runners up in the league and were promoted to
the Kent Invicta League.

In the summer of 2014 the club was renamed back to Sheppey United FC. Major investment has been
injected into Holm Park including: perimeter fencing, new dressing rooms, club house refurbishments,
floodlights, stands, levelling the main pitch including installing drainage and sprinkler system.

A second place finish in the Kent Invicta League was achieved at the end of the 2015/16 season gaining
promotion to the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division. The Kent Invicta League
merged into the Southern Counties East Football League that summer forming Division One.
2016 was a remarkable season for the club winning the Kent Senior Trophy, beating Ashford United on
penalties at Maidstone United’s Gallagher Stadium in front of a crowd of 870, whilst Holm Park’s ground
regeneration saw 715 fans flock to the stadium for a home match against Glebe.

A sixth-place finish in the SCEFL Premier Division was a great achievement in the clubs return to Step 5
of the Non-League pyramid and a SCEFL League Cup Final appearance at Tonbridge Angels losing 2-0 to
Sevenoaks Town.

In the 2017-18 Season the team finished in a disappointing 11th place in the SCEFL Premier Division but
did reach the Kent Senior Trophy Final again at The Gallagher in front of 917 spectators eventually losing
2-1 in Extra time to newly promoted Whitstable Town.

RICHARD STYLES
Hello everyone and welcome to Martyn Grove for this evening’s game against Sheppey
United.

This is our first home match of the season after what has been a busy summer for the club,
which has seen plenty of new arrivals ranging from the committee members, down to the
playing staff. It’s been well documented that we have a new chairman in Terry Hussey
and tonight will be his first experience of a home match day, and it looks set to be a good
one!

Playing wise I would like to welcome Michael Freiter, Caine Smith, Ricky Gundry, Tony
Coxall, Freeman Rogers and Joe Matthews all to the club for their first home game of the
season also.

The season is already underway and we managed to pick up maximum points away at
Croydon with nine 1st team players missing on Saturday on what was possibly the worst
pitch I have ever seen on the first day of the season. The conditions at Croydon were not
good, but credit to the boys who put everything in and got the deserved 3 points to bring
home. A goal from Joe Matthews and an own goal supplied us with a 1-2 victory at a
tough place to go and I can see other teams dropping points there this season.

On to tonight’s game against Sheppey United, these matches always seem to provide
good, entertaining games and plenty of goals and I hope tonight is the same but in our
favour of course. Sheppey is always a tough game, some of our players previously played
for Sheppey and I know that some fans would like some of these boys to still be there, but
their loss is our gain and we are prepared and ready to do all we can to get another 3 points
on the board tonight.

Added to this we have our summer soccer school running on 28/29/30th August, As well as
our 50th Anniversary game where we host Charlton Athletic on Wednesday 29th August,
7:45pm KO (Please find a member of staff for information)

I hope you enjoy the game, your support is very much appreciated and this is only the
beginning!!!

Up The Wood!!!

ONE YEAR ON...
DENNIS CAULFIELD
Excuse me if I may be a little morose for a minute.

Today marks the one year anniversary that Dad was taken
from us aged 64. I can still remember the phone call I had
from him 5 days previously telling me that he didn’t have
long left and I still remember the feeling of my world
tumbling down when I had the received the phone call from
mum at around 1.30pm a year ago telling me he had gone.

The past year has gone in some form of a blur, but still my memories of Dad burn bright. From helping to
run the team of Lordswood U8’s when I decided to start playing football in 1987 he continued to run the
team, even when I got bored and decided I’d rather stay in bed til midday on a Sunday, right through until
U18’s. Dad then got involved in the Senior set-up, holding pretty much every position on the committee
and helping out around the ground whether that be cooking the burgers and making tea in the teahut,
looking after guests in the boardroom, or as Club Chairman.

Dad’s voice around the pitch was recognisable wherever you sat or stood, and that is what I notice most at
games now he has gone. Whether he was “chastising” the officials or encouraging the players you knew it
was him.

Memories of games abandoned, FA Vase trips to Thame United and Spennymoor Town, and the images
and reports of these live on thanks to the internet and highlights videos.

More recent memories following Dad’s passing show just how well loved and thought of he was in the
football community. Last year’s squad and our dear management team honouring him with special t-shirts
during their warm-ups, the minutes applause offered by Tunbridge Wells at the Culverden Stadium. The
sheer number of text messages, facebook messages, twitter messages, phone calls from friends, past and
current players, opposition teams and supporters brought home how much he meant to people and how
much he meant to the club. Similarly it was clear how much Lordswood meant to him.

Dad would have loved last season and how the team performed, I know he’d be even happier this year
knowing how we have stabilised the committee and brought new sponsors onboard to secure our finances.
I’m sure he is looking down on Martyn Grove and watching, berating the officials every now and then,
and his spirit lives on as our 12th man with the rest of our supporters

I’ll be raising a glass to him after tonight’s game, I hope some of you can join me.

I’ll leave you with one of my favourite stories about Dad told to me by Alan Broad. Dad always used to
go to the Social Club on a Friday night for a couple of beers with a good group of friends (Dave Sims,
John O’Halloran, Alan, Ron Constantine, amongst many others – he pretty much knew everyone in the
social club!). At times there used to be a guy who came round with seafood that he used to sell, bringing a
basket in from his van with a selection of cockles, prawns, whelks etc. On this particular occasion Dad
asked the seafood guy if he had any mussels. Seafood man replied, yes I do, to which Dad replied quick
as a flash “Why aren’t you carrying two baskets then” before collapsing in a fit of laughter.
That was Dad’s humour to a tee.
