Automatic Transmission Adaptive Value Reset /
Relearn (Trans/Driveline - 018) Area N. America
- Description
This bulletin provides automatic transmission adaptive value data reset (erase) and relearn procedures.
The PCM and TCM contain logic to adjust the solenoid duty and line pressure to compensate for normal clutch
wear over the life of the transmission. Adaptive value reset and relearn must be performed to provide optimum
shift quality after completing the following repairs.
z Replace automatic transmission
z Replace PCM or TCM .
z Reprogram PCM or TCM
Adaptive values must be reset using procedure 1 or 2 according to model and model year (MY) as shown below.
The adaptive values must also be relearned by following steps 2 and 3 after resetting.

- Service Procedure
Perform the Automatic Transmission Adaptive Value Reset Procedure as follows:
Use the GDS or Hi-Scan Procedure to reset the automatic transmission adaptive values found in the automatic
transmission section menu. Follow the steps shown in RESETTING AUTO T/A VALUES or INIT OF TCU
LEARNING (Sorento - TCU SUB ROM RESET) menu sections
GDS Procedure:
1. Hook GDS to vehicle and input VIN or auto
select VIN
2. Select Automatic Transmission system
3. Select Vehicle S/W Management tab as shown
4. Select “Init Of TCU Learning” as shown
1. Follow instructions at right:
z Ignition key on
z Engine off
z Shift lever in P or N
z Vehicle speed 0 MPH
2. Click the “OK” button.
1. Adaptive Reset is complete as shown
2. Turn the ignition key off for ten seconds
Hi-Scan Procedure:
Turn ignition key to “ON” position (do not start) and
move the shift lever to “P”.
1. Attach Hi-Scan Data Link Connector (DLC)
z Select vehicle
z Select “AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE” Menu.
z Select “RESETTING AUTO T/A VALUES”
2. Resetting Auto T/A Values
z Press “REST” button
z Press “YES” button
z You must see the “COMPLETED” Message
3. Turn off Scan tool and turn ignition key off for 10
Seconds.
2. Driving Relearn
Dynamic Automatic Transmission Adaptive Learning Procedure:
1. Attach Hi-Scan or GDS and monitor ATF temperature and TPS percent.
2. Bring ATF temp. to just over 120 F and drive from a stop shifting from 1st to 3rd gears (Five speeds – 1st to 4th
gears) at 30% TPS (Approx. 3000 RPM shift). Repeat 3 – 5 times until any shock or flare is eliminated.
3. Static Shift Relearn
1. Stop the vehicle and shift into N for three seconds. Shift from N to D for two seconds. Repeat 3 – 5 times until
there is no N to D shock.
2. Stop the vehicle and shift into N for three seconds. Shift from N to R for two seconds. Repeat 3 – 5 times until
there is no N to R shock.
