The history of remote sensing began with the invention of photography in the 1800s. Some key early developments included the first aerial photograph from a balloon in 1858 and experiments using aerial photographs for military purposes in the U.S. Civil War in the 1860s. The 20th century saw major advances in remote sensing technology, including the use of aerial photography in World Wars I and II, the launch of the first meteorological satellite TIROS-1 in 1960, and the launch of Landsat 1 in 1972, which was the first Earth resources satellite.
