Lesson Plan Guide
Teacher Candidate: Anna Rogers Date: December 2nd
Grade and Topic: Grade 4 Length of Lesson: 55 minutes
Mentor Teacher: Kimberly Pruitt School: University of Memphis
UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:
- In this learning segment, the learner will create a Prezi presentation in which they compare and contrast a
book with its movie adaption. This lesson builds on their prior ability of comparing and contrasting stories
and will teach them to better present their ideas in a coherent way through research and the use of visuals
(in this case, a Prezi presentation). These are important skills because research and the conveying of ideas
will be useful throughout the entirety of the learner’s life. The purpose of this lesson is to construct a Prezi
presentation that meets the criteria of the attached handout. This skill will allow the learner to utilize a
new presentation tool and to present before an audience. Additionally, the learner to critique a book and
its motion picture. These skills apply to real life because the learner will take the role of critic as well as
improve their reading comprehension.
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
- Given a selection of fourth grade level books, the learner will create a Prezi presentation on the book and
its movie adaption while addressing the similarities and differences between the book and the movie.
- Given a checklist of criteria, the learner will conduct research and assemble a Prezi presentation that meets
each criterion.
STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
Tennessee State Standard(s):
4.RL.IKI.7 Make connections between the print version of a story or drama and a visual or oral
presentation of the same text.
4.SL.PKI.5 Add multimedia, such as audio and visual elements, to presentations, when appropriate, to
enhance the development of main ideas or themes.
ISTE Standard(s):
1c Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate
their learning in a variety of ways.
2b. Students engage in positive, safe, legal, and ethical behavior when using technology, including social
interactions online or when using networked devices.
6c Students communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively by creating or using a variety of digital
objects such as visualizations, models, or simulations.
MATERIALS:
- Book selection (students will select just one for their presentation):
Stuart Little by E.B. White
Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
Matilda by Roald Dahl
Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
- Key Concepts/Ideas: The key concept of this lesson is to allow the student to critique a book and its
film adaption while comparing and contrasting the differences and similarities between the two.
Students will also be using Edmodo to provide feedback on their classmates’ work. The final project
will be a Prezi presentation.
- Academic Language:
Content Vocabulary: Presentation, similarities, differences, opinion
Language Function: Compare, contrast, critique, present, research
Discourse: The students will be expected to know what it means to share an opinion.
- Connections and Building On: This lesson is part of a larger unit that focuses on comparisons and
contrasts. The students have already read one of the books from the book selection and have watched the
motion picture version of the book. The students will be using Edmodo to provide feedback on their
classmates’ work. This lesson utilizes the students’ prior abilities in comparing and contrasting stories
and will introduce the Prezi presentation software. The students will use Prezi to present on their chosen
book and movie.
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
Introduction: (3 minutes)
- Students should have already read their selected book as well as seen its movie adaption. Discuss how
they will begin developing a presentation on the book and movie during this lesson.
- Introduce the students to Prezi by explaining what it is and that they will be using it for their upcoming
presentations.
Procedures (50 minutes)
- Distribute the Presentation Checklist, explaining how each criterion should be checked off upon
completion of this assignment.
- Have students create a Prezi account. Use the projector to demonstrate the steps of doing so.
- Once every student has successfully created a Prezi account, go over the Prezi example (The Secret
Garden) with them, explaining each component and pointing out how the Prezi meets each criterion on
the Presentation Checklist.
- Next, have the students conduct research to find the following: Book author and movie director.
- Once they have retrieved that information, the students should be directed to check “Provides book title
and author” and “Provides movie title and director” off of the Presentation Checklist.
- Next, have students write a paragraph about the plot of the book and movie.
- Have the students copy their plot paragraph into a group discussion on Edmodo for peer evaluation and
feedback. Note: Students will not be providing any feedback during the class period. They will do that at
home.
Closing (2 minutes)
- Tell the students to begin wrapping up and remind them to make time before the next class period to log
onto their Edmodo and provide feedback on their classmates’ posts. When they have considered the
feedback and have revised their plot paragraph, they can check “Describes what the movie and book are
about” off of the Presentation Checklist.
- Also, encourage them to continue researching and working on their Prezi presentations, checking off the
criteria as they go along.
ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
- The student will create a Prezi and present on their chosen book and movie that meets the criteria listed
on the handout: Book title, movie title, book author, movie director, plot, main characters, at least 3
similarities, at least 3 differences, opinion of book, opinion of movie, and opinion of which is better and
why.
MODIFICATIONS:
Some students may not work with technology as well as others. I will be walking around and assisting as
needed during the class period. Additionally, I will provide my own feedback on the Edmodo posts as
well as post a Prezi demonstration screencast for the students to view as a guide.
