Road Map Instructions

Showing directions
Usage of language effectively depends upon the confidence of the students. The more we use a
language, the more proficient we become in that language. Attempt to make simple sentences;
guiding one to reach a spot is one of the skills to be developed.

Road map is the plan or arrangement of a place or area represented on a paper. It is a guideline given
to a stranger to find the way in a new place. Names of the roads, streets, places, land marks and their
locations are given in detail in the map. One has to proceed following the directions and reach the
destination. It is important that your directions are exact and not vague which might confuse a
stranger.
Stock expressions are used for directing someone to some destination / landmark.

 Turn right / left  It is in between….


 Walk straight..  It is just a few meters away from…
 Opposite to ……. You can find  Make enquires at…..
………  Where the two roads meet…
 After about a Km walk, crossing the  It’s right in front of …
signal, opposite to ……. You can  Cross the road junction / park/
find the ………….. bank…..
 Go straight on  Walk upto the 1st cutting / road
 Look for the ….(post office)…. junction….
 Keep going till you reach  Leave the 1st left/ right…..
 It’s adjacent to…….  Take the 2nd left / right….
 It’s on the way to…  It is next to / opposite to….
 It is nearby….  Look for the bus stop / college /
 It’s within a hearing distance hospital
from…..  It is just opposite to / in front of /
 Turn the second corner… near / in between
 It’s on the third cut from….  It is on your right side / left side /
 Don’t go beyond that…. few feet away.
 Use the subway /over bridge…  Ignore the lane.
 Pass two roads on the right  Look for bus stop / college / petrol
bunk / fire station.
 On your left you will see…
 It’s just opposite to…
