Blocking

This document outlines several badminton drills focused on developing blocking skills. The first drill, "Blocking Round the World", has students line up to take turns blocking shots served by the coach and running around a marker between turns. The second, "Cricket Catching", has students organized into groups to practice blocking shots hit between them. The third, "Smash and Block", has two players take turns smashing and blocking shots to score points. Progressions are provided to make each drill more challenging by changing shots, distances, or adding players. Key teaching points emphasize properly pushing the shuttle back over the net without swinging and maintaining correct form and footwork during the block.

Blocking Drills

Blocking Round the World

- The coach is positioned on one side of the net, and students are lined up on the opposite
side of the net
- The coach serves the shuttle for the first student to block
the shuttle, demonstrating defensive play as they would in
a normal game.
- After blocking the shuttle (still getting it over the net), the
player runs around the marker and joins the end of the
line of students. Aim to keep the shuttle in continuous
play.
- Once students have the concept of the game, a student can replace the coach to enable
whole class involvement
Progression
- Students can be eliminated from the game when a block is not performed
- Incorporate other shots in conjunction with block shots
- Two players can be in at the same time
KTPS
- Push the shuttle back over the net.
- No need to swing.
- Fast and efficient movement around the cone

Cricket Catching
- Students are organised into groups of 5-6. One student is positioned in the middle, with
remaining students positioned in a semi-circle around the middle student.
- The middle student hits the shuttlecock to each student, one after
the other
- Receiving students are to block the shuttlecock, aiming to get it
back to the middle person
- Once all students have blocked the shuttlecock, students rotate
and a new middle person begins the task again
Progression
- Have the middle person rotate the type of shot students are to
receive
- Increase the distance of the shot
- Use forehand and backhand blocking
KTPS
- Push the shuttle back to the middle student
- No swing needed
- Correct grip and movement of feet to enable effective block

Smash and Block

- Player 1 starts as the feeder with a few shuttles close to their starting position near the mid
court. Player 2 is the receiver and also starts near the mid court on
the opposite side of the net.
- Player 1 hits the shuttle high and deep and player 2 must return
each serve with a smash, trying to land the shuttle somewhere
close to player 1's feet. Hit 10 serves each.
- Player 1 is to return the smash with a block shot (main focus of the
activity). If player 2 hits an un-returnable smash they get a point.
However, if player 1 manages to return the shuttle then they get a
point. First to 10 points wins.
- Swap roles and repeat the drill.
Progressions:
- Make this into a full game with the same scoring the only conditions are that it must start
with a high serve and a smash, after that any shot can be played.
- Have doubles format, with two students on each side of the court
KTPS (Blocking)
- Push the shuttle back over the net.
- No swing
- Can be forehand or backhand.
- Return to original stance.
