News from the Catechetical Blackboard

Trick or Treat… This weekend our families participating in Family Catechesis will be learning about
the upcoming feast of All Saints Day, along with Halloween and Soul Souls Day.
Halloween's roots lie in an ancient Celtic festival for the dead. Hallow means “Holy” and this night is the night before All
Saints day, known as All Hallows Day.
Children would go door-to-door asking for treats with the promise that they would pray for the dead of the household.
Irish immigrants brought these customs to North America.
The Celtic tradition believed that evil spirits roamed on that night, so if you dressed up, they would not recognize you and
leave you alone.
Halloween can be a great learning moment for your family. As children prepare to dress up and trick or treat, remind
them of what the next day brings, All Saints Day!
And When the Saints Come Marching in…
Did you know that the saints of God are just as alive as you and I, and are constantly interceding on our behalf?
Amazing isn’t it?
All Saints Day is when the Church commemorates all saints, known and unknown. This is similar to how our culture
celebrates Veterans Day—a time to remember all veterans.
The concept of All Saints Day is directly linked to the Communion of Saints. As Catholics we believe that all of God’s
people, in heaven and on earth, are connected.
A great teaching moment could be looking up patron or family saints, dress up as Saints for Halloween or have kids
make Saint cards, like baseball cards!
There are many great websites on the lives and times of Saints. Check it out!
Dia de los Muertos!
All Soul's Day is the time to remember and to pray for those who have departed. This could include family or even
influential public figures. In Mexico this is called "The Day of the Dead." Custom includes visiting the grave of the
deceased, leaving food there and eating skull shaped candy.

Saturday, Nov. 13 Catechist Formation 8am - St. Agnes Room

Upcoming Events at the Casa 5

2010 Doggy Mascot “Andy”

Andy was adopted from the Humane Society after being rescued off the streets of the Valley in the July
heat. He had spent 10 days in the doggy hospital with infections and injuries, and when his mom Jane
found him, he was shaved, scabbed and scarred. The vet told mom that “he needed you and you needed
him” and she says that is true every day. Now Andy is a beautiful, confident dog. He’s an adult poodle
mix of indeterminate age and ancestry. He loves everyone, even cats! Strangers stop mom and Andy all
the time to say how beautiful he is and mom always has the same response…”He has a sweet sweet spir-
it!”

2010 Kitty Mascot “Pete”

Pete, Petey, Dude, Little Booger...people will call me anything!? I am a 17 year old Himala-
yan Siamese cat. I was adopted when I was three months old in Ft. Lauderdale Florida. My
dad moved us to Arizona in 2000. I got to go on a three day car ride! We even got to stay
in different motels along the way! Oh how I love car rides and motel rooms! What an ad-
venture! Being an old man kitty isn’t easy. These days I have to take my meds twice a day
but I still get to cuddle on my Dad’s lap, so it’s all worth it! Thanks Dad!

2010 Birdie Mascot “Mister Misha”

Mister Misha is an 8 year old Cockatiel. He likes to talk, mostly phrases that include “Such a Pretty
Bird,” “Mister Misha,” (he sounds quite self aware so far,) “What You Been Doing?” He then can
combine those words into different, sometimes “sensible sentences!” He loves classical, jazz, blues,
and even a little rap (introduced by the grandkids,) but country induces screams and furious wing
flaps. He does a fast dance upon hearing “treat”, and enjoys looking at his pretty self in the mirror.
Mister Misha will be hanging out at the Apache Crafts booth for the festival so be sure to stop by and
tell him he’s “Such a Pretty Bird”!

Bring your pets to get blessed with these celebrities at this years festival,
October 30th and 31st!
Blessings are each day at Noon and 2pm!
And be sure to adopt them a new friend!

Once again we welcome the Poor Clares

from Texcoco, Mexico to our community.

These Franciscan women give their lives to prayer to support all of us in our work and
daily lives. St. Francis promised St. Clare that his friars would always care for the sisters
throughout the ages and the friars are happy to be of assistance to them. If you'd like to
purchase some home-made tamales, the sisters will be taking orders the weekend of
November 6 and 7, then will deliver the prepared tamales the weekend of November 13
and 14. If you can make a donation to the sisters to help them, they do not receive
salaries and so depend on the generosity of their donors. In return, they always pray for
the good of their donors, calling down the blessing of God upon those who care for them.
God has blessed his church through the legacy of Sts. Francis and Clare, so now we
thank the sisters for their part in continuing the Franciscan message.

Circles Of Hope
Imagine being able to assist an individual or family to move out of poverty

Orientation on Circles of HOPE on November 7th, Sunday, after the 7:30 am and 9:15
am masses in Serra.

Tracy entered a Circle of HOPE this past summer, after completing 4 weeks of financial education
and 15 weeks of “Getting Ahead” sessions. She entered the Circle of HOPE with a plan, - a list of
concrete steps she knew she needed to take in order to transition from a life of uncertainty to one
of stability and dignity. She was a little nervous about her new Circle. Would they welcome her and
treat her as a valued person? Could it really be that they would offer to support her in her quest for
a less stressful and vulnerable life where there was never quite enough to make it through the day?
Tracy needn’t have worried. Her new Circle partners welcomed her with open arms. “I feel like I
have gained 8 new aunts and uncles!” she exclaimed, at a recent gathering. Her Circle members
helped her to navigate enrollment in her first Community College course, assisted her in finding
someone to fix her ailing computer, and offer her ongoing encouragement and support in a
multitude of ways.

You too can offer this kind of HOPE to somebody. Circles of Support is the third in a three-phase
Catholic Charities initiative to help families who live in poverty to find permanent, lasting solutions
that will enable them to live the life they deserve without the anxiety and stress of inadequate
resources. It involves a small group of 6-8 volunteer members who form themselves as a team to
help the family member(s) over a 18-24 month period to gain access to the resources they need for
a life of dignity. The Circles team meets monthly with the circle participant and/or individually or in
pairs as needed.
Tricia Hoyt, director of the Office of Parish and Community Engagement at Catholic Charities will
offer an Orientation on Circles of HOPE on November 7th, Sunday, after the 7:30am and 9:15 am
masses for those interested in learning about this project and how to become part of this type of
community of solidarity. The session will be held in Serra in Piper Hall.

Healing Mass Nov. 13, Saturday, 11am Feb. 12, Saturday, 11am
All are welcome! The Healing Mass is open to all who hope in the physical, mental, emotional, and
spiritual healing our God offers to us. Join us as we pray for each other and with each other, and see the
many ways God can heal each one of us. At a Healing Mass, we simply bring our needs and infirmities to
the Lord through the Eucharist.
"Lord, I am not worthy to receive you but only say the word and I shall be healed."
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will also be available following the mass.
"Is anyone sick among you? He should call for the priests of the Church and have them pray
Over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord and the prayer of faith will save the
sick person and will raise him up." (James 5:15)
Who needs God's Healing?
Someone who is sick … or someone who has been physically injured … someone in a difficult relationship
or going through a divorce … someone who is grieving the loss of a loved one … someone who is
fighting an addiction … someone who is depressed … someone struggling with anger or anxiety …
someone who is finding life too difficult … someone feeling abandoned … someone who has lost their
faith. The truth is that all of us at some point in our lives need the healing power of God.
Bring your faith (and your doubt) and come and join one another in prayer.
