Flying lotus concert
The flow of music you will never forget
name: Flying lotus + Dorian Concept
location: Melkweg the max in Amsterdam
date: Thursday 21 October 2010 20:30.
It took place in the Melkweg in Amsterdam. It is not a very large place, but great for acts like these. It
really made the concert more special than in a big concert hall like ahoy, that makes it so impersonal.
His music has taken the concert to whole new level; you could feel the music in your veins. The
music was sometimes influenced by rap and that was good for the variety. The theme of the evening
was letting loose and that sure as hell happened.
Flying lotus is an experimental music
producer and musician who
makes his genre totally his own.
He worked together with the
great José James on his album
black magic, which is an amazing
album I must add. With every
album/EP/beat compilations he
makes, he grows a little. I know
flying lotus for approximately
one year and a halve and that is
not that long. My personal
opinion is that he deserves more
credit and more fame for what
he does.
There is a big chance that you
now are thinking”who the heck
is that guy?” But with the next
line, you will be totally amazed
that he did that. He made most
of the bumper music 1 on
Cartoon Network, everybody
knows Cartoon Network.
He traveled all over the world to
give concerts and just the other
day he was here, in the little-
only-knowed-for-the-wooden-
shoes-drugs-and-prostitutes-
country, The Netherlands. It
doesn’t make much sense going
to a concert of a DJ who makes
“trip-hop” music, but his music
often
is so relaxing and gives this great ecstasy
that is indescribable. I expected much
of this concert and in this few pages
I am slowly going to explain why.
1
Bumper music is a term used for the transitions between programming elements using short clips of music
He started with producing in 2000, but his first
beat compilation came out in 2005, July heat,
which wasn’t a big success in that time, is now
fully rediscovered by all the flying lotus fans. His
first success was with his album 1983 with the
record company plug research. In one of the
reviews once made someone said “he's good.
Knows his way around a sequencer, cobbles crazy
sounds into beats that only crazy people could possibly
rap over “(pitchfork.com). And it is true; there are
not that many rappers that could ever rap on the
beats the amazing flying lotus makes. For example
mf doom (who goes under a lot of other aliases)
has the skills to rap on the beats and maybe that
is way the music of flying lotus is so special, it is
out of this world and often requires multiple
listens before you like it.
His next beat compilation was raw cartoons and
to be completely honest, there is not a lot of
information to find on that particular beat
compilation. It is also hard to find when you want
to download it, but absolutely worth seeking for.
The beats make you delirious, I almost want to
say, when you go FlyLo you never want to go
back no.
His warp (record label) debut followed with the
amazing EP reset, which he released in 2007.
From al his EP’s he did without collaborations
this was probably my favorite. The songs tea leaf
dancers and massage situation wouldn’t leave
my head for days. And those songs are after one
and a halve year still one of my favorites of flying
lotus. This EP was different from the rest; it had
more feeling which you could feel through the
lyrics in some songs and the beats in others.
Soon after that he released his album Los
Angeles in 2008 which was great hit. It is a
probably well known for it its strange and artistic
cover, that really suits the music on the album.
I couldn’t find a review of someone who had visited the same concert, but I have found
someone who had reviewed one of his previous concerts:
The Red Bull Music
Academy organized
an event for Flying
Lotus to finally do
his first show in
Toronto. I didn’t
even know what to
expect. How does
one take
instrumental
headphone music
and make that into
party? We get there
and the venue was
clearly different
from what I’m used to seeing. Some place called the Tattoo Rock Parlour. Call me a
backpacker, but bottle service and underground hip hop shows should never go together.
There was a definite mix between actual Flying Lotus fans and others simply there because it
was the trendy thing to do.
Mymanhenri started off the night lovely with some Jay Dee, some electronic and dubstep. At
one point he was doing mash-ups of Jay Dee instrumentals . The crowd was definitely into it.
He rocked it for about hour until Flying Lotus made his grand entrance. Flying Lotus started
off with some electronic beats the resembled the vibe from the Los Angeles LP. He then
continued to mixing that electronic into some dub step back to electronic. The sound system
in the venue was incredible and the bass in there was nuts.
Seeing Flying Lotus live is like something similar to the club scene in the movie Blade mixed
in with hip-hop drums. You’re not exactly sure how you’ll dance to it, but you take in the
experience because it’s like no other. He really gets into and starts making beats live for the
crowd. After 30-40 minutes of mixing and creating beats, he flips right back into
“Brainfeeder”, “A Milli (Flying Lotus Remix)”, “Golden Diva” with some with some drums I
couldn’t identify. At some point towards the end of his set he played; “Whats My Name” by
Snoop Dogg for some West Coast flavor. It seemed random at the time, but it worked.
Flying Lotus is crazy dope live. Because so much of his music is experimental, I get the feeling
that no two shows are alike. I definitely recommend seeing him.
The Dorian Concept
this was the pre-event of the flying lotus concert. The Dorian concept is in the same category
as the flying lotus and makes stunning music and not to forget Dutch. To let his fans know
him a little better he posted this “I had some Yamaha keyboard when I was about 7 - had this
“snow flakes” sound on it … and I regret not knowing what it sounds like anymore, but I was
able to trip out on just hitting the C-3-Note … also had this fisher-price tape recorder, with a
built in microphone - got some pretty crazy stuff on tape because of that … sometimes just
these really long recordings of me and my family eating at the dinner-table … I wish I could
say I recorded that out of interest - but I pretty much just forgot pressing the stop button . …
also played piano when little … stopped playing the piano when I got older … started playing
the super-Nintendo though … recently even sampled “clay mates” again cause it got some
nice arpeggio synch lines in it … crazy game … you’re a clay-ball that can transform into
animals … anyways … now I spend lots a time wasting it … and making music …”
He was quite a pre-event and very memorable. Usually you are waiting in vain for the main
artist, but this time I actually enjoyed waiting for him. The Dorian Concept is very talented
and could make it as far as the flying lotus did. The talent he has will bring him far; he even
has been on “3 voor 12”
He made this concert even more memorable than it already was and now what is the most
important, what did I think about the whole concert?
My review:
It was a concert that I would certainly revisit again. The vibe was great and so were the
people. I expected a lot from it, because the music in general is
stunning/hauntingly/indescribably beautiful. It was overall a great concert and this is why
lights
The stage was well lighted and there were a lot of light effects. It really made the
concert better than it already was. There was a great setting due the lights
music
There was a great balance between songs. The transition was perfect and so
soothing. There were songs of old and new albums, which was a good move. There
are a lot of songs that he made a couple of years ago that are just worth playing live,
well actually a lot of songs are worth that. He also improved in between, that really
showed his talent more and more.
The thing that impressed me the most was that he was a little tipsy and he still sounded
good. That is something that was something not a lot of artist can pull off. But to be
completely honest, it is hard to pick something that really caught my eye, it was a great
concert, and even the crowd was great. The way we all together grooved to the beats of his
amazing songs. I will give this concert six stars, because it was a experience of a life time,
that is also the maximum stars I can give.
